Grobag for newborn?

New2020 · 26/05/2020 20:05

Hello everyone!

I was wondering whether anyone used a grobag for newborns and whether it would be recommended. Or whether I shouldn't bother for so early on and stick to swaddling?

I like the grobag but it seems like the original one is best for 6 months + and I wonder if it would be better to save some money and get one then

Personally I found swaddling easiest for newborns. It's more versatile. You never know when they're going to fall asleep so it is hard to get them into a Gro bag at the right time, for a start! Some babies like to be swaddled tight, some loose, and some like to have their arms free, you won't know which until you get them.

Whitelisbon · 26/05/2020 20:12

All of mine were swaddled from birth, and went into grobags between 3-6 months, depending on the weather. My sisters kids were straight into grobags. Its personal preference, really, but bear in mind there's a minimum weight for all grobags (think its 7lb 7 but you'd need to check)

One thing to remember though is a newborn will easily go through 3-4 changes of clothes and blankets every day, or more, so you'll need a few of whatever you have.
Youll pick up supermarket grobags for about £10 each, and you'll get them for not a lot on ebay and Facebook marketplace, or nearly new sales if there's any near you.

Yes I did, I got the one for age 0-3 months so baby wasn't drowned in fabric. It also had extra poppers under the arms for security. My baby grew out of it bang on three months. It cost me £18.00 each and I got two, one to wear and one for the wash. If you are planning on anymore babies it will be an investment for them too.

We went straight to a grobag. Wasn't the branded one, we got some nice ones in Asda.

mylittlesandwich · 26/05/2020 20:17

We did growbag pretty much from birth but they do have a lower weight limit of 8lbs 13oz I think.

Mine loves his Grosnug which is suitable from birth. He can Houdini out of most swaddles but likes them at first, so when he was really little I used to have his arms enclosed but the poppers open so he could escape if he wanted to.

Agreed, you do need to anticipate sleep or risk waking them. I put him in his for his 10pm feed. Seems to work for us. During the day I just used/use blankets as I am awake to see he doesn't suffocate... he is very good now at kicking out of blankets, and rucking them up no matter how tightly you tuck them in...!! The grosnug makes me less nervous at night!!

We had a grobag ( snuggle) for our newborn . He hated being swaddled but I think I was just bad at it.

That’s the one we used and it’s for newborns and you can have arms in or out

Thanks everyone. It's difficult to know what is best to do! I may swaddle for the first few weeks and see how the baby likes it before getting a grobag...I'd hate to get a grobag snuggle and then not use it and baby grows out of it...

So many choices!!!

I have a couple of lightweight ergobaby sleeping bags that have been really good - my baby is not a fan of swaddling so he's been in those right from the get-go.

Cardboard33 · 26/05/2020 20:36

We also had a snuggle. Plus swaddling. We got them v cheap at nearly new baby sales. Ours preferred the snuggle (he slept with his hands on his face) and he was in it until he got to about 3 months. Then we moved him into the 0-6 months gro bag. We've always used 2nd hand gro bags as you can get them v cheap. Look online/Facebook market place or ask a friend who has already had kids if you can borrow theirs given they're in it for such a short time.

DelurkingAJ · 26/05/2020 20:37

DSs were not fans of swaddling (or maybe I was doing it wrong?). We had grobags with the extra poppers and both were fairly large babies so all was well fairly quickly.

Llamapolice · 26/05/2020 20:40

My DD hated the grobag and never slept in it. I just used a blanket.

New2020 · 27/05/2020 05:17

I've ended up just going with the tommee tippee snuggle

I got a 2.5 tog for a winter baby due in Nov

What did you guys dress baby in?

There are lots of what to wear guide infographics but some are conflicting and I've looked at too many so have ended up very confused!

MsChatterbox · 27/05/2020 05:33

Just make sure baby can't slip through the neck gap and into grobag. As to what to dress them in, it depends on the temp of your room. I always did a onesie with a 2.5 tog in the winter.

MsChatterbox · 27/05/2020 05:33

Sorry didn't realise snuggle was different!

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 28/05/2020 21:12

Look up Love To Dream arms you swaddles. They’re fantastic. Single layer so less risk of overheating, easy zip on and natural arms up position so baby can suck fists and rub face to soothe.

sarahc336 · 28/05/2020 22:01

It's really important they don't go into grow bags until they reach a certain weight, can't remember off that top of my head but the gro bag website will probably have it on as if they're too small they're head can actually fit through the gap and down into the bag x

Boringnamechanging · 28/05/2020 22:27

Dc1 hated grosnug and preferred to be swaddled
Dc2 didn't fit into the grosnug so went straight into grobag, once she could roll properly preferred the ones with legs.

Mine are November and December babies, winter they wear vest and babygrow. When it gets warmer drop the vest and then if really warm vest only.

Simonfromharlow · 28/05/2020 22:47

I did for my second but he was almost 11lbs at birth so was plenty big enough.

New2020 · 29/05/2020 06:11

@Boringnamechanging I was thiking the sleepsuit and vest combo too but wasn't sure whether that would be too much with the grosnug

Sorry for the snuggle

Depends on the temperature of the room. I always found that the guidelines provided were a little mean with clothing because the logic is a cold baby will wake up and cry but a hot baby might not as overheating is a danger.

I sort of learnt as I went along that (particularly dc1) needed more clothes than the guidelines. So if the vest and sleep suit was suggested say under 16 then mine might need it if it was 17/18.
