Hi all,

I was just wondering if someone could give me some advice about how things work in Scotland. DP and I are going to start TTC September/October time. I was wondering, if I became pregnant during my probation year but had the baby once I had finished, what would happen to me? Would I be left high and dry so to speak or would I still have rights?

Thanks xx

You are on a fixed term contract during your probation year and you'd likely not have enough service to recieve OMP so would probably be Maternity Allowance. You wouldn't have a job to tl back to as it essentially wouldn't exist anymore.

Would you be able to successfully complete your probation when heavily pregnant?

I'm assuming you would go down the flexible route to qualification? Not sure how it works as when we qualify in Scotland we are guaranteed a position for probation.

Thanks for replying. I’m planning on doing my probation year starting in august but not the flexible route. I have a few health problems that may make conceiving tricky, so I’m not assuming I’ll get pregnant on the first go. It’s also because of this that I don’t want to wait any longer than I have to. I was just wondering, what would happen if by some miracle, I did!

The money isn’t an issue, but I’m worried about job prospects on returning if had a baby immediately when my probation year ended x

Job prospects will be fine as you'll still be a qualified teacher.

The biggest issue I can see is getting a position to carry out your probation in Scotland when you qualified in England (presumably), I'm pretty sure you have to find your own school and it would be the "flexible" route even though you are doing it full time. You wouldn't get a mentor either.

Or am I reading your post wrong and you qualified in Scotland?

Are you in Scotland? Maybe post in Scotsnet topic

@YerAWizardHarry I qualified in Scotland, sorry should have made that clear! Will be starting this August and plan to start TTC in October. So earliest I’d be giving birth would be July and that would be a miracle! I know you can stop your probation year and finish it within 3 years, but I want to finish my probation year. However, I was unsure what would happen once I qualify if I was pregnant x

@RoseA89 if you finish your probabtion year you're grand as you're then fully qualified. You would basically just apply for jobs when you hope to go back to work (would obviously be at the start of each term with the big intake being at summer). There is a Scottish Primary Teachers Facebook page which is fantastic

@YerAWizardHarry I’m planning to finish my probation year to ensure I am fully qualified! Thank you, I didn’t know any of that. There’s not much advice for probationers online x
