Hi all
I got diagnosed as having gestational diabetes, I'm managing to keep my sugar levels under during the day but my morning one's are just over everyday.
Any ideas why?
Also what are your favourite meals to eat with gestational diabetes?
TIA

I was the same. I also had gestational diabetes and it was annoying but I didn't need metformin in the end, I controlled it with diet. The morning sugars were slightly high no matter what I did until the endocrinologist suggested that I ate a piece of protein before I went to bed. I ate a mini babybel every night at around 11pm to midnight and my morning blood sugar was always fine after that.

You kind of have to experiment to see what food messes with your blood sugar as it isn't the same for everyone. I read that sweet potato was great and normal potato was the devil but it was the other way round for me! Bread was OK but not rice. Porridge was OK. Ice cream was fine but dried fruit really wasn't. Don't skimp on carbs, though - the nutritionist should tell you how much to eat per meal.

I had my daughter 2.5 years ago and my bloods went back to normal immediately and have been fine ever since. I don't eat much sweet stuff though as I really hated having GD. Annoyingly now I am pregnant again they will just assume I am diabetic which means I have to take fingerprick tests four times a day from 12 weeks Sad

I am 36w and I've just been diagnosed despite "passing" the 28w test. They diagnosed me via a Hba1c test which I've read is not as reliable. My level was 40 and the cut off for GD is 39. They did this after a growth scan showed increased abdominal circumference.

I'm a bit floored tbh, DC1 was small (hence the growth scans!). I will need to go to the hospital tomorrow to collect my blood testing kit. I have had no other info, so I had 2 scrambled eggs and 1 slice of toast for dinner as it seemed sensible? Will they tell me what I need to eat (I am vegetarian)?

I'm 29 weeks into my 2nd GD pregnancy. First was diet controlled no problem, this time I was on meds for fasting levels (morning) immediately and insulin by 20 weeks. Nothing I did changed those levels, it's just hormones.

Hb1ac is not reliable for GD, my last one was at 12 weeks and was 32. I do have it, and fairly badly.

They will get you to monitor bloods which is a much better indication of GD. Diet wise, the NHS is getting better but their advice in my trust is awful; I would be on ridiculous amounts of insulin if I ate what they said.

The thing to remember is to count all refined carb as sugar and never eat a naked carb. You need a small amount of good carb and plenty of fat and protein to slow down sugar release. So super seeded bread with lots of peanut butter, or a small amount of whole meal pasta with lots of veg and cheese. Cereal of any type is the devil, dried fruit ditto. Many ladies think they are tolerating white bread or porridge but are missing spikes. NHS hate spending money on test strips but any dicey food you should test at 15/30/45 mins to check you aren't getting a rapid rise and fall.

I always recommend this but find the Gestational diabetes UK group on Facebook and have a browse through their website and posts. Excellent diet advice and loads more.

Protein and fats are your friends, carbs not so much but you shouldn't cut them out completely.

Look up kerosene or low GI recipes for some really good ideas.

The main plan is to always pair carbs with a protein and that all sugar including fruit needs to be reduced.

Low fat yoghurts need checking carefully, as do all low fat foods as they tend to replace fat with sugar.

Some of my favourites back when I had Gd were:

Scrambled egg on rye toast
Mini Full English - bacon, egg, beans, tomatoes, mushrooms
Full fat Greek yoghurt with berries

Chicken/fish/beef with salad
Whole meal seeded pitta with chicken and hummus
Grilled veg and meat
Stir fry vegetables

Apple slices with peanut butter
Veg sticks with hummus or cottage cheese

That should say Keto not kerosine

Thank you! Everything I read says Hbac1 isnt reliable, maybe I should push for another glucose test, even the diabetic nurse who phoned me said if it wasn't for covid they would have had me in for a repeat gtt.

Hi all, I've just found this thread, I'm just in the process of 2 weeks of testing to confirm GD or not. I'm allowed 3 high readings before they confirm it. The last 2 mornings since I started testing I've had high readings (6.3 got to be below 5.3). The rest of the day my levels are fine! I've tried the baby el trick mentioned above last night and didn't work for me.
It's so frustrating I don't want to be diagnosed based only on these morning readings but looks like it's going that way!

LimpLettice · 17/06/2020 12:12

I'm on metformin and insulin, @flossiegrippiter solely based on morning readings. GD is also progressive so at 6 weeks I could eat almost anything and have good post meal reads, now at 32 my tolerances are way lower. I was diet controlled in my previous pregnancy as fasting wasn't my issue.

Fasting is the hardest to control and for a lot of us unaffected by diet. Dx is annoying but it's better to know and get it under control than have it affect baby.
