Pregnant teachers - going back in June?

I am just wondering what you’ve been told by your school regarding going back in June. I teach primary and my school is re opening, but HR and the headteacher said they may avoid using me to look after Year 6 and asking me to stay at home. I am 16 weeks at the moment.

Pregnant women are still on the vulnerable list, I'm not going back to work. I'm 32 weeks so wont be going back until after my maternity leave finishes in July next year x

My head has told me not to even think about coming in to school. I haven’t been in since the week before lockdown and not been on any of the rotas for key worker childcare. I teach year 4 so my class aren’t back on 1st June, but all the other teachers are in teaching a ‘bubble’ of the year groups that are back or key workers. I feel very lucky to have such a caring head, I’ve not had to bring up whether I was to come in or not at any point, she’s just always told me I’m not! I’m 28 weeks on Wednesday anyway, so third trimester which is apparently when we should be being even more careful.

I'm supposed to be going back 2 days a week in year 1...I was 12 weeks yesterday.

Ang3113 · 25/05/2020 10:00

I haven’t heard yet, but I will be in my third trimester so I’m a bit worried about going in to be honest. Think Neu have advised pregnant teachers to work from home?

Prettylittlelady · 25/05/2020 10:32

@NoNameIdeas I’m supposed to be going back too, I’m 20 weeks on Wednesday. Teaching Y6. I’ve not been in or included in any rotas up until now. Bit worried but I think it’ll be OK then after 28 weeks I won’t work until I have the baby unless anything changes.

Prettylittlelady · 25/05/2020 10:33

@Ang3113 I’m going in but only until 28 weeks my head wants me to work but not after 3rd trimester.

Hi! I'm 10+1 and I told my Head that I was pregnant on Friday. Up until that date I had been coming in weekly to work with key workers children. She said she didn't want to risk me coming in to school at all and that I'd be working from home until government guidance changes (she said she can't see any changes before September). She said she has err'd on the side of caution but because the virus is so new and unknown she doesn't want to take any risks with staff. She told me I should have told her ASAP as soon as I knew I was pregnant but it's so tricky because I didn't want to tell anyone at all until our scan - however in the end it wasn't just my health it was the health of my baby I had to consider. Pregnancy women are still on the clinically vulnerable list and government documents say for us to work at home where possible x

I'm not a teacher I'm a one to one last week my head sent an email out to all staff explaining the plans for if they reopen, she also attached a new updated list of people considered vulnerable and pregnant is on there so really no one should be expecting you back, I know so people have said if your not over 28 weeks then your expected in work but I've not actually seen anything with how far in pregnancy you need to be, my school is planing to have children in that are not key workers children or vulnerable from the 4th June which has worked out well for me as that the day my maternity leave starts

Flora20 · 25/05/2020 18:56

The 28 weeks thing is when you should be being even more careful - anyone who's pregnant should be working from home still. Nasuwt and the neu are both making that clear, assuming the others are too? Obviously if you choose to go in that's different but no-one should be asked to go in.

hellosun20 · 25/05/2020 19:09

I'm 16 weeks and on the home learning rota. Normally teach y6 but will be doing their home learning resources/keeping in touch instead.

NoNameIdeas · 25/05/2020 19:10

I didn't really get a choice! Was initially put on the rota for a bubble on days I don't actually work (am part time) and now have 2 days with one of our yr 1 bubbles.

Aragog · 25/05/2020 19:11

The pregnant teachers at my school will not be returning at this point.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 25/05/2020 19:17

I’ll be 24 weeks by the 1st June. I’m not going back in this wave but if more year groups go back, I don’t know what will happen. My class isn’t one of the first back but other teachers are being called to different year groups to cover for vulnerability and keeping to the 15 maximum.

On the 27th June, I’ll be 28 weeks and in my third trimester. Not sure what will happen if school is back completely as there will be just under a month left before the summer.

CrumpetsAndPuzzles · 25/05/2020 21:44

Thanks everyone. I’m still waiting to hear from my head, hopefully in the next few days.

My Head said they absolutely do not want to risk anyone vulnerable so has told me not I'll not go back. I'll be 23w by 1st June and I teach one of the returning year groups. Head has also implied I won't be back at all when I sent the dates of my next appointments.

pinkflamingo561 · 26/05/2020 00:41

I'm secondary and 21 weeks and I'm not expected back when year 10 and 12 go back.

Gemmahhh · 26/05/2020 02:39

Hi, I am a primary teacher too and currently 9 weeks pregnant. My head has called me a few times to check up on how I'm doing- but he called me a few days ago to say he doesn't want me to go in, but instead (a day per week) teach the kids via zoom for an hour or so and upload homework for the kids
