Hi all,, I'm 39 + 6 wks along and early this morning I had what I thought might be a show. !!!TMI WARNING!!!! I had a load of clear and creamy white discharge. Now I normally would have thought it was just an increased amount but it really was quite a lot.

In the antenatal classes I've been to they always say a 'show' is a little bit bloody and so did my midwife today. Was so excited this morning but now am thinking that it might not be what I think it is. Does anyone know? And how long on average after having a show does labour start?

A show tends to be bloody.

Could you have thrush? (TMI I know, just exploring all options here)

There is also anecdotal discussion that some women have a cervical 'weep' before labour starts - something about prostaglandins ripening the cervix causing an increase in discharge.

Not much help am I, let's see who else is around...

Erm... Well this is just my experience but I had lots of creamy discharge shortly before I got my show. I wondered whether the white stuff was the show, but when it actually appeared it was practically green and looked more like snot than vaginal discharge

Puppie · 20/09/2007 12:47

Spillage21 I did think about Thrush but dont have any itching or other thrush symptoms so I dont think it was that (although could of course be wrong).

Mindalina...mine was a combination of the snotlike stuff and clear stuff.

Niiice! Pregnancy is so grim! Was there any green? There was DEFINITELY green in mine, I felt so sick seeing it.

mindalina · 20/09/2007 12:49

Oh, and there was some blood in mine, but only a tiny amount, I could easily have missed it if I wasn't paying attention, and I think it was towards the end of everything that came out, if you see what I mean? It took a day or two for my plug to come away completely I think.

TheQueenOfQuotes · 20/09/2007 12:49

That's what I had with DS3 - I had a lot of "clear" stuff - and then the rest of the plug came away in "bits" over the next 12hrs or so

Puppie · 20/09/2007 12:49

Lol....no green but an equally umpleasant yellowish colour instead!

I had a massive amount of white jelly discharge (tmi ) which the midwife said was a show.

julie07 · 22/09/2007 12:25

i am 34 weeks pregnant and had a show the other day... should i be worried???

bananabump · 22/09/2007 12:56

Hmmm... doesn't sound like a show to me but I can only go off what I've read and personal experience. TMI Alert: Mine happened about 12 hours before I gave birth, it was like thick yellow jelly with red streaks and there was loads of it, perhaps 2 or 3tbsp!

Hope it all happens for you soon though! Fingers crossed. x

julie07 · 22/09/2007 13:06

mine was more clear with bloody streaks through it, i am just a bit worried cause i am only 34 weeks

bananabump · 22/09/2007 13:23

Julie, the reason why a bloody show is significant is because the blood is caused by tiny blood vessels in the cervix breaking as it starts to dilate. I would definitely ask your midwifes advice because although it could be many things such as blood from cervical erosion during sex for example, it's quite possible it could be a show, which is usually a reliable sign that things will get moving in the not too distant future.

Don't panic though, even if you were to go into labour today which is unlikely if you've had no other signs (diarrheoa, lower backache, loads of braxton hicks, nesting etc) 34 weeks isn't very early to have a baby, plenty have their babies 6 weeks early and are fine. My sister had her first baby at 35 weeks and she was fine.

Do call your midwife though, better to get checked out than sit and worry! Best of luck x

julie07 · 22/09/2007 13:33

thank you for the advice....
i have had a lot of lower back pain and been going to the loo alot so i am going to ring the midwife just to get it checked. thank again

bananabump · 22/09/2007 23:15

No problem, hope everything's ok. Let me know how you get on! x

julie07 · 23/09/2007 12:34

i contacted my midwife and she said i had to take it easy and try not to do anything tht might start me off.. she is hoping i can go till 37 weeks.. so heres hoping i can. she said it is a defenate sign of labour in the really near future

bananabump · 23/09/2007 14:13

Woohoo! well that's positive news in a way (I bet you can't wait for baby to arrive) and at least you know you won't go overdue, trust me there's nothing worse. Fingers crossed for you to get to 37 or 38 weeks, just take it easy and don't lift anything heavy, I hurt myself at about 34 weeks carrying a bog standard load of washing. Take advantage of this resting time, anyway... you won't get much rest afterwards!

Best of luck with it all!
