Hi everyone,

So I found out I was pregnant this week. I am very early on, having just missed my first period. I called my GP to see whether I needed to make an appointment or next steps (first pregnancy) and was told to call back in 4-6 weeks to make a GP appointment. Is this normal? I feel like all the advice online says to see your doctor immediately, but I might just be over keen as this is my first.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Well firstly OP congratulations! 🥰🥰🥰
Unless you are on medication or have any health issues then you don't need to see your doctor as they will just give you a number for the midwife and tell you to call them to register your pregnancy and then they will send you a letter with your first appointment to see your midwife.
Usually you complete a form and hand it to reception who then do the rest, but given the current circumstances with the pandemic just call them instead 😁

Don't worry OP, it's normal, even outside the UK. My first check up was at 8 weeks pregnant. Probably you don't want to know this but most pregnancies that end in MC, end during the first trimester so I guess their reasoning is that they wait seeing women until the risk is much smaller

Congratulations and all the best Flowers

Every trust is different but in my area you don't see the GP at all.
The receptionist gave me a number to self refer to the midwife then I got a booking in appointment for when I was 9/10 weeks.
Nobody actually confirms the pregnancy!

Hi, congratulations!

Yes, you don't get seen straight away, I think about 8 weeks you have your booking appointment which is with a midwife to go over all your history, make up your notes etc.
They won't confirm it themselves or need to do anything at this early stage

I found this very confusing as I read initially they need to confirm it. But it is all changed apparently! Most hospitals you can self-refer but my one had to be referred through my GP :) Congratulations
