Baby measuring above 97th centile 28 weeks - advice

Hi everyone,

Just had my midwife appointment today and baby is measuring above the 97th centile so I’ve been booked for a gestational diabetes test.

I’m just really worried as I was previously not classed as a risk for GD and have been offered the test based on this measurement today so I wasn’t expecting it.

My fiancée is 6’3 and I’m 5’1, could this be the reason? She did say he feels like a really long baby as he’s right up in my ribs. I’m really worried about something else being wrong and it harming the baby as I’ve had issue after issue in this pregnancy with hyperemesis and all sorts 😣

Any info would be amazing as I’m getting myself a bit stressed !

Hi OP! It could just be that you're having a big baby and it's as simple as that.
If you have GD at least you know early on and can make sure your diet and exercise are nailed for the last 12 weeks of your pregnancy. GD is nothing to worry about if caught early enough and you keep it under control. I know a few women that had it and if anything it helped them stop eating crap! 😂😂
I'm concerned over how big my baby boy will be. My DH was 7lb7oz born, as a twin!!!!! And his cousins were all over 10lb! The boys are big in his family and all of them are 6ft 5inches plus!
Try not to worry too much (easier said than done I know! 😬) but just see what your tests results say and go from there.
All being well you'll end up with a big and strong baby!
I probably wouldn't bother with newborn size and go straight to 0-3 months! 😂
But I do genuinely hope everything is ok xx

I'm currently 28 weeks and had my bump measured at 28+4 and I'm measuring on the 97th too. I had my GD test a few weeks ago and it came back clear - the bump measurement from what I've read (FTM) doesn't mean a lot as it's down the baby's position, fluid and all that stuff.

The test isn't horrible either. The drink isn't fabulous and I was hoping it was something I could chug but it's very gloopy- worth it though for the peace of mind

Similar height difference with my DH - DS ended up over the 91st line for height, weight and head circumference.

It's better to get all the tests and checks done so you can get some advice if you are having a big baby. As with PP, probably just get 0-3 month clothes, my DS had pretty much outgrown them by 2 months old!

Is baby's tummy big? And extra fluid? As they are usually the indicators for GD (I'm a sonographer by the way).
I wouldn't worry too much at the minute. Ultrasound isn't always accurate!
Or is it the midwife's measurement that's put you on the 97th centile? Because that's also super common and not always true when you have a scan.

Did they use your fundal height to work it out or did you have a scan? Fundal height is so inaccurate. I had a growth scan at 32 weeks which showed baby on the 42nd percentile. The day after, my midwife measured my fundal height and plotted baby at 90th percentile 😂. So that’s how inaccurate fundal height is!

Measuring the fundal height can be inaccurate and it differentiates between each professional measuring it. But be reassured that you and baby are being looked after.
You don't need risk factors to have gestational diabetes I was only tested as my sister had it. My baby was measuring small and had to come early due to her reduced growth.
If you do have it, it's good it is caught early on in your pregnancy rather than further down the line.
It's hard not to worry! But again be assured you are both being monitored and looked after 😊
