I'm 34 weeks pregnant and have ever worsening SPD, excrutiatingly painful espcially at night.

Obviously I can't sleep on my back, I get stars in front of my eyes and can't breathe properly, If I sleep on either side I can literally feel my pelvis shifting and am in alot of pain, and the next morning I can't move-My DH has to lift me out of bed and I have to stand for up to 20 mins in agony until my pelvis audibly crunches back to where it should be!( feelin sorry for myself at the mo )

So.... I bought myself 2 widgy cushions from mothercare- horseshoe shaped cushions, put them on the mattress so they made a ring and slept with my bump in the middle on my front. I got some sleep and no manic pain the following morning.

Told my MW about this today and she was a bit shocked and told me it wasn't a good idea and to keep a really close count on babys movements and warned me about compression problems. Baby is fine, but now I'm panicking as its the only way I can sleep. The bump is well supported... I wondered if anyone knew of problems arising from sleeping on your front during pregnancy, I've googled it but couldn't find much.

Sending lots of hugs to any other SPD sufferers-I know there's a few of you out there xxxxxxxxxx

I sympathise - I had nights where I took to the sofa so I could 'sleep' semi propped up. I had a couple of sessions of acupuncture, and that really helped. My acupuncturist shares consulting rooms with a chiropractor who had literature promoting a specially designed support belt which if correctly adjusted limits how much your pelvic bones can move, but as the acupuncture helped, I didn't try it.

Sending you a hug, and hoping you sleep better tonight.

I have heard that sleeping on your front during pregnancy isnt a good idea, but you seem to have supported bump and ensured his/hers safety... i am 28 weeks and also suffer with SPD so i really do sympathise, and some times i wake up with tummy cramps as i have rolled onto my tuim... think its bubs way of telling me to move! our bodies have a way of letting us know these things and hey if you have managed to find comfort then take it!

Not sure, as never tried, but have you tried a long bolster/body pillow and sleeping on your side. I found that it helped tremendously. You put it between your legs, which helps stabalise your pelvis, then under your bump and hug the top bit I still sleep with it now and DD is 16 months old

I've tried a body pillow, but unfortunatley it just won't cut the mustard at the moment. My hips just aren't having any of it!

I'm seeing a chiropractor tomorrow to see if that helps. I did see a phsio 6 weeks ago who gave me a fembrace and said she couldn't do any exercises with me as I was pregnant, like I hadn't noticed!!!!!

I was so worried by the MW yesterday that last night I slept upright in bed with the widgeys so that I could list to the left slightly, only woke up every 2 hours or so , not terrible, but I don't want baby to come out looking like flat Stanley!!!!
I know I'm not the only one so I'll take comfort in that, just hope it goes away after the little one arrives-

Hugs to you all and praying for some sleep xxxx

I know what you're going through frangipan. I've had to sleep on my back most of the time, as sleeping on my side can really exasabate the SPD the following day.

I've tried sleeping propt up in semi sitting position with bendy cushion under my knees, to slightly tilt my pelvis. I then shuffle onto my side(s) during the night for a little bit, so i'm not totally on my back, as i know it's not great for the baby - but i just can't sleep any other way. It's a mare! Good luck with it. x

Frangipan, check out www.bumpbag.co.uk/BB_testimonials.php

theres a midwife from Portland hospital saying they are ok to sleep on - and another lady with SPD who uses them to sleep at night.

It seems to me to be the same principle as what you're doing already!
