just that really... i posted on conception too but hoping to get replies here! I am so anxious

If you have had a hysteroscopy before, do you mind sharing your experience? I am a little scared...
I am doing it with a private fertility clinic.

They first told me i was going to be awake but the doc could give me anaesthetic on the day if they need to cut stuff but i have been a little traumatised with bad iud insertion experience and a recent biopsy of my cervix so i asked to be asleep and they agreed to plan it.

Am i being overly dramatic?

I have no clue on what to expect??

Thanks 😊

I was asleep for mine - everyone at the hospital was really friendly and helped keep me feeling calm beforehand and the care afterwards was great too. No memory of the op at all, and woke up thinking I hadn't been asleep long enough lol. Was home just after lunchtime. Felt sore and tender for the first couple of days afterwards but slept and rested lots and was feeling much more normal within a few days. Wishing you all the best for it.

I had mine done abroad, where there are renowned for being more ‘thorough’, so mine was done under a general anaesthetic.

Sore for a few days and a small amount of bleeding. I credit it for being one of the few reasons I am now pregnant after 6 years of trying!

I know they give you a local anaesthetic into your cervix.
Can they give you an oral sedative?
I didn't have a hysteroscopy but I have had egg collection procedure. I was given an oral sedative to take the evening before (best nights sleep ever!) then another oral sedative in the morning. Then some IV pain relief and IV sedative. I don't remember any of the procedure at all I just remember people being friendly, my husband sitting next to me and I dosed off.

Your not overly dramatic, it's just you don't know what to expect xxx

Thanks so much ladies for taking the time to reply!

So you were sedated or under a proper genee anaesthetic ?

Just reading your positive experience makes me feel a little calmer. I am also abroad so glad i am not the only one!

General anaesthetic for me. But I had hysteroscopy, lap & dye and ovarian drilling. Plus they removed some endometrial tissue that they found.

I was scared beforehand as it was my first operation but it's a really common procedure, my doctor called it a fertility MOT lol.

One word of advice is to make sure you're hydrated in the days leading up to it, I didn't really drink enough and couldn't pee afterwards even after drinking a tea and about a litre of water as by the time I had the op I was super dehydrated.

@SunnySideUp2020 GA. Was absolutely fine.

Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy · 20/05/2020 23:49

I had one and was fully awake. It was fine, they just blew air into my womb and had a look around. They found loads of polyps, too many to remove with local anaesthetic so they booked me in for a general. I then found out I was pregnant before I got around to having the procedure!

I would say if they have a look and find something they want to remove and you don’t feel happy to have it done there and then you can always stop and book in for a general

@Itsnoteasyfeelingqueasy
Thanks for replying!
yes that's what they initially offered but i don't know - i am just so uncomfortable with the idea of having someone open my cervix again. The iud insertion was such a bad experience i wanted to be sick.
I have had too much probing there lately on top of ttc so i just asked to be asleep so i don't think about it...
Also because it's private and abroad we are paying everything so if they need to do something I'd rather they do it there and then, as otherwise we have to pay again for a procedure...

@SunnySideUp2020 I had a hysteroscopy in November and I was absolutely dreading it, put it off twice. I'm no good with procedures and faint at blood tests. Unfortunately I had 3 mc's in the last 2 years so lots of prodding and poking down there 😬
However my consultant who carried out hysteroscopy was amazing, he told me they can put me to sleep but didn't recommend it as I'd already had 2 erpc's under general anesthetic and he just said it's not recommended to have so many unless it's absolutely essential. What he did use was a water method - a nurse was gently spray water into my cervix, water was really cold and kept me a bit calm too and it was over within a few minutes - about 7-8. Im the worst person for these procedures, I get worked up with smears and had some bloods yday and fainted!
Ask your consultant if they use the water method, air can be more uncomfortable xx
