What are some must haves for first time mums? Not the usual things but anything you've found helpful. Someone recommended Ewan the Dream Sheep so I will be looking into getting one of those, just wondering if there is anything else Smile

A good sling/carrier.

Congratulations @tossacoin1 Smile
My DD is about to turn one and some of the things we found incredibly useful are:
Black & White baby book by Tana Hoban - this really helped me get a few minutes as DD would love to stare at this for ages!
Nuby shark teether - she LOVES sharky and gnaws on him constantly when her teeth are bothering her, that may seem a little way away yet but trust me if you have these things to hand before you'll thank yourself for it!
Loads of vests and sleepers at the start as DD was very sicky and had poo explosions so we would change them multiple times per day! Also, because she was sicky we found the Morrisons or Asda pull over bibs (they're really long and cover the whole tummy) ideal because she didn't sick up her milk everywhere.
I also watched every "newborn essentials" video on YouTube and just bought all of the things that recurred on other videos!
If you can, a changing mat upstairs and downstairs and a caddy downstairs with nappies etc in really helped me after c-section
DH and I made the mistake of assuming because we were both huge babies, DD would be one too! So we had all 0-3 and no newborn, then we had to keep sending DH out to buy more newborn outfits as 0-3 was far too big! So it's worth getting some in just in case!!
Hope this helps, I'll add more if I think of any! We're thinking about TTC number two so I've had baby necessities on my mind! Haha!
I hope all is well Smile

This, baby slept through from 5 weeks. Washable and the sound box can be removed unlike Ewan.

A sling. A water bottle with a nozzle. A cup that holds or coffee/tea hot. 1000s muslins.
Don't bother with Ewan, it's such a pricey product for what it is, didn't work for us at all. We use Alexa dot for white noise in baby's room and also for music which works amazingly. If you have more than one you can do internal announcements eg for your partner to come help or bring stuff.
We also used remote controlled led candles during the night as it was so much easier controlled and not as bright as beside lamps.

Netflix
Amazon Prime
Good earphones
Long length phone charger
Foldable changing mat for your changing bag to save baby having to touch grotty changing tables in cafés

Changing mat and place for wipes etc downstairs as well as upstairs if you are in a house, as going upstairs feels like a mountain to climb in the first few weeks.

Vibrating rocker chair was also a saviour once they are a little bigger. Vibrations work wonders to keep little one asleep whilst away from you and also REALLY help with constipation. We got a Fisher price one that lasts til toddler years, don't go for a tiny baby one as they grow out of them so quickly.

Other than that, try not to buy into lots of the gimmicky things that cost a fortune, get things as and when you need them. Amazon prime will be your friend!

Many muslins and a V-shaped pillow

crazychemist · 21/05/2020 09:10

Sling/carrier - some babies DO NOT like to be put down, and sometimes you need your hands!
Some dim/dimmable lights for night time nappy changes. You don't really want to get fully awake for these, but you do need to be able to see what you're doing!
For you - basket, or something else easy to carry with a water bottle and some biscuits, a book or some other entertainment. It's easy to get stuck on the sofa when breastfeeding, and if you don't have someone else home with you it's a PITA!
Little tiny bibs are good for catching dribbles/overflow just after a feed, but some babies don't like them.

I would caution against buying too many things before the baby comes. They are all so different that you just might end up wasting money. For example:

DC1: bought a billion muslins and baby carrier. He was never ever sick and he hated the carrier, but liked being in the baby bjorn bouncer.

DC2: loved being carried, swaddled etc so we got use from the carrier (although I bought a different one and a stretchy sling for the first few months), hated the baby bjorn.

I’d advise having lots of the basics. Vests, baby grows, bed sheets, nappies and wipes. Everything else can be bought as needed. Have everything ready, so the crib made up etc, so you are ready to go.

I do agree with having a small basket with nappies/wipes in a few easily accessible places, a few changing mats, and a water bottle (although I was never ‘stuck’ under a baby, they are tiny, you can breastfeed and walk at the same time to get a drink).

White noise machine, get one that can play continuously all night. I got mine from amazon but not sure if Ewan the sheep turns off after a while? My DS woke up if the white noise stopped.

A video monitor is so helpful but won’t need it straight away if baby is in your room at night. Again got mine from amazon.

I had the baby Bjorn baby carrier and liked how sturdy it is but some people really rate wraps too. Either way get something so you can be handsfree at times to eat etc if baby wants to be held.

Lots of vests and sleepsuits in up to one month size and 0-3, probably around 10 of each and a few cellular blankets for sleep and when you’re out.
