I’m a first time mum (17 weeks pregnant) and we’ve just found out we’re having a boy.

It’s our first baby and I just wanted to buy a couple of bits for baby And I thought it would be nice to do it in bits to spread the cost over the months.

So I thought it would be nice to buy a few bits of clothing the only problem is being a first time mum and having no idea about babies - what size should I buy?

Generally what sort of size is newborn - ie if we were to have a baby over 9lb would he fit into newborn? Should I buy 0-3 months to be on the safe side?!

I’m so confused can someone give me some tips?! Smile

Also I know some outfits are really cute but some can be difficult to put on and be uncomfortable for baby. Soft leggings and sweaters that button up would be ok but jeans and shirts really aren't.

One issue you'll find is that different shops have different sizes. Newborn in one shop is 0-1 month in another so I'd suggest getting a couple of different brands. My little one was 50ish centile weight but 98th for length and I used newborn, 0-1 and 0-3s.

My little one is just about to turn 4 months and this is what I bought in preparation for his arrival:

10 plain white short sleeved white vests in size newborn, another 10 in 0-1m and another 10 in 0-3 (all from Tesco)

9 long sleeved sleepsuits/all in ones in newborn (3 packs of 3 from m & s, boots and Sainsbury's), another 9 in 0-1m (same package/brand split) and another 9 in 0-3 (same package brand split)

If I was to do it again I would cut out the newborn size and just get 0-1m and 0-3m. I would buy the vests from different places rather than all from the same. I would still get a variety of brands for the sizing differences that you get but would also consider Asda and next as I've had 3-6m stuff from them and it's been really good.

As others have said don't bother with proper clothes - maybe one soft set of dungarees or something (it's all we had) just incase you do get out or have visitors etc and don't want him in (essentially!) pyjamas. Forget about things like tailored trousers or denim, it's just uncomfortable for them and fiddly for you.

Good luck!
