I managed to control it with diet & exercise on both my pregnancies. I stuck to the diet set & by the dietitian & it worked . Good luck xx

A friend of mine did it. She was very strict with her diet and followed the advice on this site. Can't really tell you more than that, but good luck with it!

I managed to control with just diet and exercise. I was well monitored and DD was born a normal weight.

Also, if you get a positive test please don't worry. As long as you follow the advice you will be fine. Good luck

I had the medication and didn't even try diet because my diabetes was diagnosed so late at 33 weeks and they wanted to get it under control as apparently I had a massive baby. I didn't actually have a massive baby. I think I would have been able to control it be diet though. I was on metaformin, why are you worried about taking the tablets. I think a lot of pregnant women take them with no ill effects

Thank you so much guys feels much better hearing you can just control it eith diet and exercise if you follow it properly I am just scared of taking the tablets as I get terrible anxiety when it comes to taking pills :( I did check my own blood level before breakfast a few days ago and it came back as 5.4 mmnol so hoping for the best fingers crossed x

Unfortunately it's hormone/placenta related so it's not always possible to control by diet alone. I stuck to the diet it rigidly but still ended up having to take medication. It's really not too bad, I have ended up on 2 x metformin tablets with my evening meal and 18 units of insulin before bed. The insulin needle is SO tiny you don't feel a thing - the constant finger prick checks to check your sugar levels are way more annoying, which you'd have to do if you're diet controlled anyway. It's nothing you've done wrong and nothing you can always control so please don't feel bad if you do have to take anything - if you really hate pills you don't have to go on them (some people don't do well with metformin anyway it can give you a bad tummy) but insulin is usually really well tolerated by all. It's even allowed me to introduce a few more complex carbs to my diet too! Good luck Flowers

Hello I just want ask how is look dwlivery and post delivery if you diagnosed with GT I just been diagnosed in my 34 weeks and don't now a lot

NicNac100 · 19/05/2020 11:28

@Kadamama the best advice is to have a look on www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/

Also there is a Facebook page too - both sites are created/run by a mum who had GD with all three of her kids - the sites are amazing, so informative, full of advice, support, recipes, shopping lists etc.

sometimes the NHS dietary advice is based more on Type 2 diabetics and a lot of the food they can tolerate a mum-to-be with GD can't, so defo check the website out, it helped me massively :)

At least you've only been diagnosed at 34 weeks so only a few weeks to go - I've had to do this diet for over 3 months now - I can't wait to give birth and be able to eat ALL the treats again Grin

@Kadamama I opted for a c section prior anyway due to failed induction and prior c section. They ended up saying I would need another anyway because of large baby which was estimated 6lb 5 at 32 weeks! Consuktant brought it forward because of risk of stillbirth which was not gest diabetes but large baby plus my age (41) When I had c section at 37 weeks he was 6lb 15 oz 🙄🤷‍♀️and no probs with his sugars at all. I did have my diabetes well under control by the time he was born. As long as you are able to get it under control all will be fine. You read a lot of stuff in Google, but gest diabetes doesn't often lead to huge problems.
Post delivery I was supposed to be retested but due to corona etc that never happened. I've used some of my tests strips though and my sugars seem to be normal and I'm back on the carbs and ice cream. 👍
