Tooth Pain...Help!

So I'm half way through a root canal and the filling in that tooth came out during my first trimester. I couldn't get to a dentist as I was bed bound with morning sickness and then lockdown began soon after. I've been eating on the other side of my mouth. Now I seem to have an infection on the side I eat on. My gums are swollen and theres about 4 teeth in a row that hurt. Will I be able to get an emergency appointment for this issue? Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do in the meantime? I'm in a lot of pain and unable to eat which is difficult when you're 27 weeks pregnant and always hungry!

@ChocoLover7 I'm 27 weeks and juatchad a large filling drop out exposing the nerve. It's agony and I'm terrified it's going to get infected!
My plan is to call first thing in the morning and literally beg for an emergency appointment.
Good luck.

Oh poor you! Phone your dentist first thing tomorrow, although they are closed, they will be able to give you advice and should be able to get you an antibiotic if needed (if it is an infection you have- they will be able to prescribe you something safe to take during pregnancy but make them aware of it). There should be somewhere that can see you for emergency if required but depends where in the country you are and how easy that will be. In the meantime, take paracetamol, keep the area clean with gentle brushing and warm salt mouthwash. If you have any sensitive toothpaste then rub a small amount around the affected teeth. Otherwise depending on the nature of the pain, a hot or cold pack on the side of your face might work to give you a little relief. For lost fillings, try and get a temporary kit from your local chemist/supermarket or amazon. Hope that helps a little ladies, your best bet is to phone your dentist ASAP or NHS24 if you have unbearable pain out of hours Smile

Definitely get an emergency appointment, you poor thing!
My sister is a dentist, they’re really quiet, and have plenty of PPE. Good luck xx

I have a failed filling and am in need of root canal - stupidly putting it off but today things have really escalated. I normally have a private dentist but they’re closed and advised to call 111 which I did tonight; they gave me the numbers of two dentists taking private/non NHS registered patients and said to call at 9am tomorrow but be prepared to have to keep redialling until I get through. 111 also said that neither of these dentists were doing face to face dentistry, just telephone triage, but could refer to a hub for emergency face to face if necessary. Pregnancy makes things a little more complicated but either way I think you’ll need to go through a telephone triage with your normal dentist if open, or another one dealing with non-registered patients.

How are you getting on OP? Did you ring up this morning?

I'm just waiting for a call back but already been told replacement fillings and root canals not happening so I either have to put up with the pain and risk infection or have the entire tooth extracted. I'm terrified of the dentist as it is and absolutely beside myself!!
I'd rather just leave it but an infection would be really bad as I'm allergic to penicillin and the alternatives aren't suitable in pregnancy.

sel2223 · 18/05/2020 12:53

@GivenchyDahhling did you call up? I'm in the same position. Had a telephone triage with my normal dentist and just waiting on a call back after they've spoken to the nearest emergency hub.

Thank you for your responses everyone!
@sel2223 I havent had a chance to call yet. The swelling has gone down. I found some Corsodyl mouthwash yesterday which seemed to help a little. Will update you once I get through to them. I hope you feel better soon, keep us updated x

@sel2223 Called my dentist and was forwarded elsewhere. The lady was super unhelpful and rude. Told me they're not taking appointments whatsoever and she cant give me anything, not even antibiotics. She wouldnt let me explain the problem so it seems she was talking out of her arse. She advised to take painkillers and use mouthwash.

@ChocoLover7 that is disgraceful!! My dentist are doing telephone triage only but referred me to another practice who rang me back straight away and went through my options. They've found an antibiotic I can take and have advised on pain relief but are more than happy for me to call back and go in if I need to be seen face to face. They are still doing emergency treatments if and when required.
They also said there are different hubs with some set aside purely for vulnerable and shielding individuals with extra measures in place.

@sel2223 My dentist called me and asked me a few questions. She's prescribed me amoxicillin and told me to come back once I've had the baby. Hopefully it'll help with the pain. I hope you find relief aswell!
