How many times per day is it normal to be sick in the first trimester?

Hello lovely ladies. I an 6w+2 and have had slight nausea since my bfp in the mornings. Since yesterday, this nausea has transformed into actual horrible sickness, where I have been throwing up 5 times today. I haven’t managed to get out of bed. I have tried ginger tea and eating only bread today, it worked for a few hours but back to being sick again. I have bought some sea sickness bracelets and ginger candy that arrive tomorrow. I am really worried about my work, even if I work from home at the moment, it is long hours and not sure how I will manage if I feel sick.
Today I was very close calling my GP/EPU to find a remedy to get better. Do you think I should call tomorrow? How many times being sick per day counts as normal or too much? Thank you for your help in advance xx

I caught a sickness bug when I was about 5 month pregnant, it was awful. I thought it was the morning sickness at first but after 2 days I was back to feeling nausea all day, which was normal. I was pretty knocked by the sickness bug though. Hope your feeling better soon.

If you feel you need to speak to your GP, trust your own judgement! X

I remember logging 16 actual vomiting episodes, as in 16 x times I actually threw up, in a day, before I got bored of keeping a record and realised that being sick a lot was my new normal. Ginger never worked for me — its only result was a lifelong dislike of anything ginger-flavoured. Eventually I figured out a food that I could usually keep down. Unfortunately, it was barbecue-flavour Hula Hoops. I lived on them for about six months of pregnancy.

I just had to deal with it at work. I knew all the nearest loos and had a collection of emergency airline sick bags on me.

Good luck!

Afraid it can be a LOT. The Important thing is not so much how often you are being sick, but whether you are managing to stay hydrated and how much weight you are losing. If you are dehydrated or have lost a significant amount of weight, see your GP. Personally, I’m being sick ALOT at 11 weeks, but I’m managing to stay hydrated (sitting in the bath helps, and I drink more at night and in the middle of the day when I can keep it down). At my booking appointment, they tested my urine for ketones (can be a sign of starvation apparently) and as there weren’t any present they say I’m keeping enough nutrition down.

It’s grim. I was the same with DD1, but I cannot express how much tougher I’m finding it with a 3yo!

Ginger never did anything for me, but eating little and often and sticking to easy to digest stuff meant that I’m mostly throwing up stomach acid and bile rather than loosing nutrition. You kind of get used to it I’m afraid! Hopefully you will be one that finds it passes quickly.

I had to eat a little bit of carbs every 2 hours. As soon as I got hungry I got sick all 1st trimester and also around 8 months. It's horrid poor thing, be gentle with yourself and get lots of rest.

TokyoSushi · 17/05/2020 21:07

I maxed out at 9 times in a day, it was grim.

Pleasenodont · 17/05/2020 21:10

I used to vomit up to ten times a day with my first DC. I never vomited in any other pregnancy, just felt sick all day long instead. I vomited multiple times a day with DC1 from week 6-16. Didn’t really think anything of it tbh, I just managed to push through it.

KavvLar · 17/05/2020 21:19

It really sucks. I had very bad morning sickness with DD1 from 7 to 14 weeks then it eased. Lemon sherberts ice lollies and water biscuits were all I could keep down. Then it eased.

Dd2 I was even worse from 9 to 26 weeks, it was hyperemesis both times but thankfully I went to the doctor the second time around. All I would say is don't suffer unmedicated. Go to your gp, there are plenty of anti emetics that are safe in pregnancy that they can prescribe, and don't be fobbed off. I swear it was one of the worst things I've ever felt.

There's a sliding scale of pregnancy sickness from morning sickness up to hyperemesis, it often confuses people who had a mild form themselves so don't understand yours is not the same. Hope you feel better very soon.

Thank you for your kind messages lovely ladies, it is reassuring to know that others have gone through the same ordeal. xxx

Oh bless you

I found constantly sucking on polo / soft mints really helped and also difficult as you feel sick so can't stomach eating, but eat little and often.

Plain rich tea used to be a good choice.

Charlottejade89 · 18/05/2020 09:54

I was sick probably about 4 or 5 times a day on average with my dd. Sometimes more, sometimes less. From 5 to 12 weeks. This time round I have had some nausea but no actual vomiting and now Im 9 weeks and actually feeling much better. My sister is also pregnant and she find lucozade sport (the non fizzy type) really helps her nausea and it contains lots of electrolytes too

Byets · 18/05/2020 09:59

I was sick about 11-14 times per day op. It's the worst feeling isn't it ☹️ in the end I had to go on anti sickness tablets as they where going to hospitalise me for dehydration and I really didn't want that. The anti-sickness tablets took the edge off a tiny bit (if I kept it down) so deffo something to try it may work for you.

Aside from that I carried a lunch box with me everywhere to be sick in (disgusting I know lol) it didn't leave my side until I was about 14 weeks and it had subsided. Now 30 weeks on Wednesday and can confirm it does go away and you do go back to normal 😊 keep going xxx

SecondStarFromTheRight · 18/05/2020 10:04

Haven't read everyone's replies but just wanted to say, you should definitely seek help from your GP. I was being sick 10 times a day and thought it was totally normal but got so dehydrated I had to be hospitalised. Get something to help you keep fluids in you and it'll just be a nicer journey all round.

userabcname · 18/05/2020 10:10

A lot, sadly. In my first pregnancy it got to where I couldn't keep water down and was ultimately diagnosed with HG. In me second it wasn't as bad - had a few days around 6-7w where I vomited every couple of hours but then it settled and I was sick about once or twice a day until 16w when it stopped. Make sure you're sipping water and do speak to your GP if you really aren't coping or think you're dehydrated.

Snufkins · 18/05/2020 10:11

I was sick daily from about 8-12 weeks several times a day and had the odd bout of nausea up til about 18 weeks. Ginger didn’t help and I just had to dash to the loo at work and keep a sick bowl in the car. I found my nausea worst in the morning and had to keep snack in the car for when I was driving to work in the morning to keep it at bay.

Ninkanink · 18/05/2020 10:13

With my first I was sick multiple times daily for the first five months and felt sick continuously. It was horrendous. I weighed less when I had the baby than I did before I got pregnant.

With my second I still suffered very badly with nausea but I wasn’t actually sick as much.

Togepi · 18/05/2020 12:25

If it's becoming really disruptive and you can't work or function in your daily life, your GP will prescribe you anti sickness medicine (if you want it of course).

I had round the clock nausea in my first trimester. I was very rarely sick but felt so unwell that I couldn't get out of bed for days and weeks on end. I'm self employed so being unable to work was a bit scary! I went to the doctor and she prescribed tablets without hesitation.

I say this so you know that you don't have to hit a certain number of vomiting episodes per day in order to get help...

MsChatterbox · 18/05/2020 12:30

If you get to the point you can't keep anything down make sure you get medication! I had 3 days of not even keeping water down, but the day I got my prescription I randomly kept down a meal deal so didn't need it in the end!

ElectricTonight · 18/05/2020 15:14

Read up about Hyperemesis gravidarum , I had it in my first pregnancy and it made the entire experience horrible. If you have the symptoms talk you your doctor or midwife as you may need fluids if you become dehydrated. Hope everything settles soon for you OP Thanks

Jg93x · 18/05/2020 15:55

The most I was ever sick in the trimester was 15 times in 12 hours, I ended up going to hospital and being put on a drip as I was very unwell. They advised I had hyperemesis.

I would definitely suggest giving the GP a call as they may prescribe some anti sickness tablets, they helped me massively! There’s nothing worse than feeling so poorly.

Hope you’re feeling better soon 💕

BikeRunSki · 18/05/2020 16:14

Aaaeghhh! Wrote a long reply, and lost it!
Pregancy Sickness Support has emotional, medical, legal and practical advice.

Also, your employer must record pregnancy related sickness seperately and cannot use it against you - but they must know you are pregnant.

LivingThatLockdownLife · 18/05/2020 16:16

No don't just suck it up. Get the medication. There is more than one you can try. They are more effective the sooner you start taking them.

Please don't suffer. It's not neccessary

cptartapp · 18/05/2020 16:31

I was sick most hours of the day for the first three or four months, or wretching anyway as I couldn't eat much. I used to force myself asleep to escape the awful feeling, and then wake up in the night to be sick. I lost so much weight my collar bones were protruding. Nothing ever really helped tbh. Only time off work and the progression of the pregnancies. Felt like I was slowly being poisoned.

MrsSmith2020 · 19/05/2020 13:58

So glad I found this thread.

I'm really struggling with the nausea, dry reaching/retching!? and violent sickness (especially at night)

I was prescribed Cyclizine- but it just knocks me out cold for about 3 hours each time I take it. Which is no good during the working day. I'm currently waiting on a call back from the duty GP to hopefully change to a different anti sickness tablet.

Every day feels like a marathon and my OH just doesn't understand why I'm so poorly.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 20/05/2020 08:32

Up to 80x a day with my first but I also had Hyperemesis Gravidarum. If you are struggling to keep fluid down speak to your GP. Or Pregnancy Sickness Support.

Loz1093 · 20/05/2020 09:35

I'm currently 7+2 but from the first day on week 6 I could not stop throwing up. Monday just gone as I hit week 7 I physically couldn't carry on being sick after losing 10lbs in a week!!! Purely from not eating and being sick from any fluids. The GP said I'd got HG so has put me on anti sickness pills. Touch wood they are working and no side effects but we shall see, only taken 2 so far. Smile
