Dental advice!

Hi ladies!

Keeping my fingers crossed that some of you may have experienced similar recently and can share your advice.

I phoned my dentist on Tuesday as an area of my gum was quite inflamed, swollen and bleeding. My dental nurse reassured me this was most likely due to hormones and to keep the area clean. I've followed her advice since but tonight the swelling seems to have increased, I have the strangest feeling of throbbing but also numbness in a lot of the area. I think I may have an abscess but I'm unable to see my dentist due to the ongoing covid19 situation. Does anyone know if they are likely going to be able to prescribe antibiotics for this without seeing me? I'm just about 10 weeks pregnant so really don't want to leave this too long if it is an infection!

If this were me, knowing how important dental care is in pregnancy, I would phone the dentist back, and/or phone your GP (unless you already have a midwife?). Under the current guidelines I believe swelling is enough to warrant a proper appointment. Calmly persevere until you get sorted.

My dentist has a Facebook page with a list of what they will see you for and what they won't.
Pretty sure infection would get you an appointment.

I'm having to call myself first thing Monday as my filling just fell out exposing the nerve!! I never knew pregnancy affected your teeth!!

It sound like an infection, especially the numbness. They are definitely prescribing over the phone so do call them! Corsodyl mouthwash can help ease the inflammation too. When it's better you can always dip teepee interdental brushes in a little corsodyl and use that to clean in-between your teeth, helps to get rid of pregnancy related gingivitis. Hope your mouth is feeling better soon x

If your dentist won't prescribe antibiotics then phone 111 and select the option for dental emergencies hopefully you will get somewhere with them, I had the same feeling you described last week but turns out it's just my wisdom tooth acting up after a filling last year and needs to come out. Hope you get it sorted x

Hi everyone,

Thank you all so much for taking the time to share your thoughts and advice. I really appreciate it and it has given me a lot of reassurance that I'm not over reacting!

Thanks xx

Your dentist will provide antibiotics over the phone if they think it sounds like an abscess

An area of swollen gum thats inflamed and bleeding sounds like pregnancy related gingivitis. Hence why they didnt.

Theres no need to go phoning your GP or 111. Phone your dentist up, they will do a telephone consultation and prescribe as appropriate.

Hi op my gums have really been playing up too. They’ve been bleeding loads, last night after brushing and that you’d think someone had hit me in the mouth there was quiet a bit a blood. My dentist recommended daily flossing and corsodyl mouth wash, apparently it’s very common in pregnancy hence getting free dental care. Hope you’re feeling better now and it’s sorted x
