Hi

Has anyone self referred them self to an early pregnancy unit after having several miscarriages (Iv had 3) to have an early scan done? Or do you just have to pay for a private one somewhere else?

Midwifes being no help so I don't know what to do?
I don't mind paying but just wondering x

I think it depends on your trust. My local EPU have given me two scans in my first trimester ( during covid lockdown) due to my recurring missed miscarriages. I rang them up and self referred. They did say they are generally not doing reassurance scans, but based on my history they made an exception. It’s worth giving them a call and asking.

I had two miscarriages. On the second I was referred to them for a scan so I was then on there system.
Im on my third pregnancy and I had bleeding and pain at the start and yes I self referred by calling them direct and was on there system. I don't no if that is all units that do that I was very lucky.
Hope you can do the same as I wouldn't have gotten through the early days without them x

At my local EPU, you can only be referred by GP / midwife, there is no self-referral even if they have seen you in a previous pregnancy / miscarriage. Current advice (during covid-19) is that you'll only be offered a scan if you have heavy bleeding and cramps or if you have a history of ectopic pregnancy. I think some units are seeing patients for reassurance scans but it will depend on each unit. I've had 2 miscarriages and was not offered any additional scans in this pregnancy, nor did I ask for one because of the above guidance as I assumed it would be a no. I have my 12 week scan in just under 2 weeks, and really hoping my patience pays off.

Thanks for the comments everyone, I think il just
Pay for a private one. I have contacted a company who are only open on Mondays due to covid19 so I will most likely book myself in there I think that would be safer than going to the hospital x

I’ve had 3 consecutive and my trust (Scotland) has stopped doing them when there is no symptoms to ‘worry’ about. My community midwife nor the recurrent clinic knew as I imagine guidelines are changing all the time.
If I have no bleeding or pain I’m waiting until 9 weeks and booking a private so if there is no heartbeat (I’ve never seen one) at least my husband can be there.
No harm in asking your EPU though as it will vary!
Hopefully you get positive news.

Very lucky here. Epu acts as a gyny A&E and you can turn up and been seen 24/7, 365 days a year.

It depends on the individual trust. At mine the guidelines are that women who have had 3 consecutive miscarriages qualify for an early scan. Give them a call and ask what their referral criteria is.
