What has been your experience of running while pregnant?

I was in peak marathon training when I found out I was pregnant; 6 weeks later I can barely run 3 miles!!

Wondering if I'll get more energy back in 2nd trimester?! (Obvs not planning to run a marathon lol!)

So glad I found this post. I am 13+3 and regular runner with a club. I was training for Manchester marathon when I found out, having just completed a 21 mile training run. I now am struggling to run 5 miles without feeling knackered and breathless. I have suffered with awful exhaustion, nausea and bleeding. Hoping second trimester will get easier. I have tried not to kick myself for feeling lazy, but I am still struggling with accepting it a bit as running is a big part of my life x

sunshinefordays · 20/05/2020 08:38

I'm almost 23 weeks and currently running 10km two-three times a week...though "running" is extremely generous, now much more like slow jogging, which turns to plodding when going up even a slight incline or in the last mile home! Feel very heavy and legs just seem like dead weights!

Keep going everyone! Even something short and slow is better than nothing at all Smile

Paris2019 · 20/05/2020 09:20

@KrissyMB ... almost exactly same as me! I'm 13+3, am a club runner and was training for London, which would've been my 6th marathon. Was training hard for a pb, had done a 20-miler and was in great shape. Same as you, exhaustion and nausea from 6 weeks completely knocked me out! Now I am doing max one 3-miler a week which is a struggle. Am trying to be kind to myself and also starting to think about focusing on strength exercises etc... but all I've ever done is running! Guess that pb is going to have to wait a while... !

I think it is really difficult if you are highly committed to running and suddenly you have to take a big step back. I’m trying to focus more on time on my feet rather than distance or pace and reminding myself that I’m training to be healthy for birth rather, than a marathon, but it is still frustrating.
If it’s any conciliation my friend from my running club came back and absolute smashed 20 mins off her marathon PB after giving birth and she didn’t run throughout pregnancy so there is hope for good running after birth too! X

KatieFTM · 20/05/2020 10:24

@Paris2019 ahh this is the same for me! London Marathon cancelled Friday, conceived the following week 😅 congratulations!
I am also hoping to return to running when the nausea/sickness passes :)

Paris2019 · 20/05/2020 10:34

@MadameDePompadour ahhh that's what I want to hear... that it is possible to get post-pregnancy pbs!!

@katieFTM ... when are you due? I'm wondering whether it's possible to give birth in November then run London in April 2021 lol!! (Realistically I know that is NOT going to happen ;)

😂 You sound like me haha. I’m not due until mid Dec, possibly closer to Christmas. I have my first private scan today so should get a better idea. So I know it will be off the cards for me, but I’m also hoping that they will offer some kind of extra deferral with it being cancelled as I don’t think it will go ahead in October either! Was it London you were training for as well? I just assumed it was Paris based on the name :)

LooseyGoosey · 20/05/2020 10:49

It's a while since my marathon running days but I was pretty committed to 3-ish runs a week before pregnancy. I've set myself a goal of at least 5km a week (in one go) for as long as possible but I'm sooooooo slow now (21 weeks) and I have to say it's really hard going. I expect I'll be walking the 5km by 30 weeks but going to try and keep doing it anyway as I think it'll make it so much easier to get going again after the baby arrives.

I was totally knocked out after a parkrun at 5 weeks pregnant (went back to bed for 2 hours!) and it was a major sign that I was pregnant - got a BFP later that day.

Paris2019 · 20/05/2020 10:59

@KatieFTM I did Paris last year, and it was going to be London this year! I agree, I think it will be cancelled in October, so hoping I can then defer my place from 2021 to 2022...!

I couldn't run once I was in my second trimester, but replaced it with swimming - which was fab! And some yoga and circuit classes.

sarahc336 · 20/05/2020 12:26

I've just turned 14 weeks and after not being able to run since 5 weeks have actually been able to get back out there again, I'm mega unfit and it's slow and hard but I'm out there doing a bit so hang in there ladies you will feel better and get some energy back and be able to plod around like I am 😂😂 x

JC084 · 20/05/2020 13:36

I'm 17+4 and have really struggled to keep up my running.
I ran a half marathon at 7-8 weeks and felt ok but haven't done much distance since. I also did 20 miles at 5 weeks but after those two have only done a few miles here and there.i was training for Manchester but it was a godsend for me it was cancelled as I really don't think I had it in me!
I really want to get back out there and run but I am a little bit nervous. My heart rate gets high very quickly which worries me.
Is this normal?
We're possibly going to try a slow 5k this eve and see how I get on x

KatieFTM · 20/05/2020 13:59

Here’s to hoping our luck is in 🙏🏻

RestorationInsanity · 20/05/2020 14:38

I've been looking for a thread like this! I'm 11 weeks and have only been for one run. In part because I cannot find a good sports bra. I was very much in the "no boob" brigade so any sports bra/fitted crop top was fine. But my boobs seem to get bigger by the day and are agony. Sometimes I even have to hold onto them when I'm sitting down! Also, the breathlessness has been mad, I thought I was fit pre-pregnancy, but now I get out of breath walking up our stairs!

sarahc336 · 20/05/2020 15:38

Yeah my petite boobs have ballooned and hurt when I run now, don't know what to do with them 😂 I think running in pregnancy is just different to running pre pregnancy, I run slower needs more breaks and can't run as far but I feel good even being able to Lloyd my way around some kind of run, not sure how long it'll last for though x

Carabu1 · 20/05/2020 15:50

Me! Pre pregnancy I was a keen club runner doing xc, marathons, etc. Since finding out (I’m only 8 weeks) I’ve cut right back to 4 runs a week, easy pace, max 8 miles each, mostly flat. Tbh atm it feels much as usual - I have to make an effort to keep it sloooow - but sounds like I may be in for a shock from the above!

Carabu1 · 20/05/2020 15:51

Tbh I feel a bit guilty for keeping going, but with swimming off the table there aren’t that many other options. I’m quite glad with lockdown no group training is allowed though, or I’d be gaining injury to my club mates!

RestorationInsanity · 20/05/2020 18:34

Don't feel guilty! For as long as you feel good, carry on. I'm looking forward to feeling well enough to go (bra permitting!), and I don't even think I've had a hard first trimester, but it has really floored me!

Bienentrinkwasser · 20/05/2020 19:14

@Carabu1 goodness don’t feel guilty! Regular exercise is one of the best things you can do for pregnancy! Studies have shown better blood flow across the placenta in women who regularly exercise.

sarahc336 · 20/05/2020 20:28

@Carabu1 don't be daft not all women find pregnancy hard, you might be one of the lucky ones, sounds like your doing well at the min, at 5 weeks I felt too ill and just sat on the sofa until about 11 weeks and hated it, good luck x
