Anyone going private at the Portland?

Bessie123 · 19/09/2007 10:55

After getting to 15 weeks and still no word from any NHS midwife, I decided I definitely wanted to go private. I have had 3 appointments at the Portland, but they have all been quite brief and in 1 room, so I didn't get a great idea of what is to come (I also had a tour of the labour rooms, but still don't know what to expect).

I was wondering if anyone else is going to the Portland, and what they think of it.

Missbumpy - I'm Stepney. At the Portland, after you arrive in labour, you're not left on your own; you have a midwife with you all the time. They do have facilities for emergency caesarians and neo natal care (but, of course, these are more expensive). I think it is v important to feel relaxed, so for me, the hotel-like surroundings are a plus.

How are you feeling?

Don't get me wrong Bessie, if I could afford hotel like surroundings I'd be considering it too! In fact, at one point, I was so miserable at the Royal London that I was considering begging/borrowing/stealing the money to go private somewhere. I'm just glad I've found somewhere I feel more comfortable on the NHS. You have to do what feels right for you.

I'm feeling ok thanks. A bit stressed about all the things I need to do before the baby arrives but apart from that all is well I'm not sure what to expect of the labour ward/birthing centre because it's always been too busy to have a look around when I've gone for tours but I've been told I'll be well past caring by the time I'm in labour!

If you're in Stepney, I've heard surprisingly good things about the Homerton. I don't know why I wouldn't have expected it to be that good but I know a few people who gave birth there and they all had good things to say about it.

moocowme · 19/09/2007 19:14

well after listening to the comments at my local bunps and babes meeting i am glad i am not going to my local NHS. post natal care virtually non existant and limited visiting hours even for hubby so all the chavs are in visiting at the one time. most did not get a wink of sleep and left as soon as able to.

The Portland does do quite a few CS because they will take most complications where as John and Lizzies will not take higher risk patients. I tried to get in their but was refered to the Portland. it is rare indeed to be transfered out of the portland to an NHS place.

i just want to be somewhere quite and calm with DH to help me and staff who come on call when needed.

iampgatlast · 19/09/2007 19:16

sorry to hijack but i emailed the portland sometime ago about switching from nhs to private. does anyone have any idea on cost involved in doing this?

Tallis · 19/09/2007 19:22

Again, don't have experience of the Portland (though friend had the worst possible time there a few years back). But am booked into Lindo Wing for my first (due in three weeks) and the midwives, antenatal, doctor experience etc has been great. Lovely consultant who always calls back if you leave a message and invites you straight in for a chat/reassuring checkup if you feel anything is amiss. One thing to note is that they don't have birthing pools there, though. And certainly not as five-star ritzy as the portland but comforting neo-natal unit yards away in St MAry's proper. Don't know how many people end up having Caesareans but have never been given the impression they're done because they "suit the consultant". And it's very close to Paddington station, so an easy nip round the Metropolitan/Circle line for you!

Xanthipi · 19/09/2007 20:17

I'd a lovely experience at the Portland for my first baby. But I'd a completely uncomplicated birth and pregnancy, so I can't speak for someone who had a compicated or problematic pregnancy/birth. The care I received was extremely good in every way. The only disappointment was my consultant--I found him brusque and arrogant.

I went to the Lindo Wing for my second, having decided that because there is a risk associated with birth, i'd preferif I were to opt for private careto be in the private wing of an NHS hospital in case of emergency.

That's still my feeling--that it's safer to be in/near an NHS hospital. For that reason I wouldn't go to John & Lizzie's either. (In fact my friend nearly died there twice: both during the birth, and after the operation she had there to correct damage done to her reproductive system.) And for the same reason, I'd be hesitant about having my baby at home. I guess anywhere that isn't a proper hospital with back-up care makes me nervous.

As it happens, my second birth, the one at the Lindo Wing, was also very easy. But I hemorrhaged afterwards. Though I didn't need a transfusion, it was comforting to know I was somewhere that could handle that kind of emergency. On the other hand, I didn't get the assistance I'd have gotten were I at the Portland. At the Lindo, I was sent off to the public loo right after the hemorrhagethe midwife didn't seem to take my dizziness seriouslyand I fainted. I suspect the midwives would have been a bit kinder at the Portland--well, that was my experience with the first birth.

I loved the Portland and have no regrets about going there. I'm sure it continues to be lovely. When my son had a procedure there requiring an overnight stay, it was wonderful then too. But because I'm a bit neurotic about the possibility of complications, I'd probably not go back.

I'm booked into the Portland for my first baby at Xmas. I decided on private because I had heard nothing from the NHS by 14 weeks and then was told my first scan would be at 23 weeks as they were full and couldn't do me earlier. This is after a horrendous experience of missed miscarriage last year which the NHS completely botched and I had to then go to the Portland for them to 'tidy me up' as it were. I have a fantastic lovely consultant who I trust completley (he also did my ERPC at the Portland) and the midwives I've met so far at the Portland have been absolutley lovely. I want a natural birth with as little intervention as possible and I feel very looked after and supported, so much so I am not scared of labour at all. They DO have neo natal care at the Portland, but as you said just expensive, but the way my husband and I view it is this.. This could be our only child and it will still cost a hell of a lot less than our wedding so we've put the cost on our mortgage!

Bessie123 · 20/09/2007 10:57

Mostlymay, it sounds like you've had a v similar experience to me. You're a few weeks ahead of me; perhaps we can keep in touch about your experiences there as a sort of heads up for me..?

iampgatlast - it is £8K - 10K (they do seem to like adding on extra costs).

Bessie, I'm booked in to the Royal London but I'm planning on going to the Barkantine Birthing Centre which opens in December. It's going to be 1-on-1 midwife care in a new facility... have you been offered that yet? My GP is really encouraging about it. I'm in Limehouse, btw. Not interested in travelling v far once labour starts!

Sorry, I know this is about the Portland, but had to add my 2 cents in!!

Bessie123 · 20/09/2007 11:35

I've never heard of the Barkantine Birthing Centre.

You live v near me.

Spillage21 · 20/09/2007 11:43

Just to add my two penn'orth.

Recently met an excellent midwife who had done bank work at several private and NHS hospitals in and around London. She said that some of the worst births she had seen were at private hospitals...

Bessie123 · 20/09/2007 12:00

Spillage, that is not the most helpful post ever...

OP posts:
Anchovy · 20/09/2007 12:04

There are lots of threads in archive on this.

I had my 2 DCs at the Portland and could not fault any part of it - my birth experiences were extremely positive times for me and my whole family.

Spillage21 · 20/09/2007 12:08

Maybe not, but this midwife had no axe to grind whatsoever...I was shocked too (as someone who also considered going private).

DarrellRivers · 20/09/2007 12:11

There are bad births in both private and NHS hospitals.
I reckon private wing in NHS hopsital gives you the birth experience you want with the added back up of NHS medical/ITU and neonatal teams if needed (very small percentage hasten to add)

DarrellRivers · 20/09/2007 12:14

The London had a dreadful obstetric reputation and one of the unhappiest Labour wards I've ever had to work on.
The midwifes were horrible to everyone, the patients and the doctors, so you can imagine that did not make a good birth experience

e14mum · 21/09/2007 10:29

Bessie,

This is the info online on the Barkantine.www.thpct.nhs.uk/uploads/services/pdf/(PC)_BirthCentre.pdf

I always forget how close we are to Stepney! When are you due? I'm in March.

Darrell... I don't think your second post is very helpful, considering this isn't a thread about The London and some of us are having their care there! I think you can say that about a lot of hospitals, really.

DarrellRivers · 21/09/2007 14:26

Sorry e14mum, was trying to make the point that people make loads of unhelpful comments about private hospitals and the same can be true of NHS hospitals.
Generally NHS london hospitals are struggling with midwife retention etc etc and so it can be a little pot luck.So yes, it can be said about a lot of NHS hospitals particularly in London.
Hopefully your way of accessing better midwife care will help you individually.
And having good labour care should be available to all.
I can understand why people do go private.
I hope the London has improved with time(this was 5 years ago) but I was still shocked when I worked there.
I didn't mean to be unhelpful

saskia71 · 21/09/2007 17:20

Hello Bessie,

I am expecting my first baby at the end of Jan/beginning of Feb, and will be having it at the Portland. I am having a consultant led delivery, and I see him at his consulting rooms just off Harley St. I have my scans carried out at a place on Harley St, by a consultant in fetal medicine. I do not have any appointments at the Portland, but I have been there to view the facilities.

I am extremely pleased with the quality of care I have experienced. My appointments are relaxed and never hurried, we go over all the points we both wish to discuss. The scanning machine used is state of the art. Both my consultants have excellent professional reputations, and publish in the academic press.

Since I live in Surrey I need to consider the logistics of getting to the Portland, hence my obstetrician will either carry out an induced procedure or an elective caesarian. Either way, he will be there for the whole period, in addition to this I will have a midwife assigned to me by the Portland.

I don't know whether you are considering the midwife led service at the Portland, or the obstetrician led service, I hope that my experience provides you with some more information.

Best wishes to you.

NoNameToday · 21/09/2007 17:46

Hi Bessie123, you've got quite a few posts on here now haven't you!

Hope the information and advice from the posters has helped you.

It's difficult making a decision regarding the safest place to have your baby isn't it?

I really feel that you were let down by the NHS and that's such a shame. There are fantastic units/doctors/midwives in the NHS but sadly, the less than good care stories tend to predominate in the press and on similar forums to mumsnet.

My very best wishes go to you for the rest of your pregnancy and delivery.

MarchMum · 21/09/2007 19:29

for those of you who had birth at portland, did you ever feel like you were talked into a caesarean (or they tried)? people say this but i wondering if it's just talk/jealousy?

someone asked about £ - you need to budget at least 5,000 for private, and be prepared to up to 10 if caesarean

i am presently at uch (care ok, facilities atrocious), want to go to portland, but only hesitation is this caesarean worry

sleepfinder · 21/09/2007 19:53

Bessie, I had my first child at the Portland last year via the midwifry unit.

The scans and antenatal visits were good, everything was absolutely fine - quite relaxed / they're a caring bunch etc.

Birth was normal (after uncomplicated preg) and took 12 hrs (they hurried me up as I wasn't going fast enough...)

Only problem was with the midwife who delivered. She was a miserable cow and clearly didn't want to be there, she was not encouraging and ended up making a big mistake on delivery which meant I lost a lot of blood and stayed in an extra night to recover. Her name was Chris and she's from NZ. Not sure if she's still there as she spent the whole 10 hours leading up to the delivery telling me how she'd rather be travelling teh world...

The others though were lovely and I'd have trusted them COMPLETELY

moocowme · 21/09/2007 21:13

i am having an EC because i have no choice in the matter (not unless i want to risk death!) . My health insurance is covering it in full as its a medically necessary operation so i do not know what the price is but the website for the hospital does have some info you can download on this.

everyone i have delt with their has been very good and nothing is rushed. its seems so much nicer than my local NHS place who i see on the news tonight have some sort of infectious bug outbraek.

mostly i am looking forward to having DH stay over with me and getting lots of help in the first couple of days after it.

trippleshot · 21/09/2007 21:42

I delivered at the Portland in February and had a really positive experience. Staff were fantastic. I was in the consultant led unit as there were complications I had to have a CS. One of my colleagues had her DS there too, but in the midwife led unit and was also very happy with it. Unusually all my ante-natal was at the John & Lizzie, and after reading the near death experience of one of a poster's friend, am even more relieved they transferred me.

DeLorenzo · 28/09/2007 01:21

saskia71, are you by any chance seeing Dr. Gibb at The Birthing Center? I just saw him last Wednesday for a consultation as I am looking for an OB to help me when I become pregnant with 4th baby.

would love to hear your personal experience with him so far and his center. did you get the impression that he espouses natural methods?

how is the Portland Hospital? I live around the block from there so it would be convenient to be able to deliver there.

thanks!
