Anti D injection

Hi all I’m just thinking about my Anti D injection which is scheduled for next Friday and wondering about if I should postpone it. I see my midwife on Tuesday so will be asking then too but it’s a question stuck in my head and I would like to get others opinions.

So yesterday morning I had a slight trace of a bleed and rang maternity dept. I am 26 weeks pregnant with 2nd baby. I am Rhesus negative my first baby was positive. So on their advice I went straight in and after blood tests and examination they gave me Anti D. All good. In the stress of it I thought my routine Anti D appt was about 2 weeks away if not 3. In fact it is next Friday. The midwives did tell me I could attend for my routine Amti D if I wanted and if I had known it was so near I would have questioned it a bit more.

So should I get another Anti D injection next Friday or postpone it for a few weeks? I think it lasts about 3 months so I know getting it yesterday might be slightly too early to last until the end of my pregnancy.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. Have you already had an Anti-D with the current pregnancy? Why would you delay having the next one if they've said to come in then to have it?

howells · 16/05/2020 10:52

I think I would try to contact your midwife to ask. I guess it depends whether having another dose so quickly is a problem or not, and on the other hand whether going about 10 weeks between this one and the one at 36 weeks is a problem (that will depend on how long the protection lasts).

I had one at 36 weeks and then again after the delivery with dc2. So less than 5 weeks apart. But not quite as close as you’d be having them if you go for your scheduled jab next Friday.

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 16/05/2020 10:54

If i were you I'd have it ASAP

I was assuming you’d have one at 36 weeks btw. When I was pg with dc2 the antenatal jabs were scheduled for 28 and 36 weeks. Since you’re seeing mw this week I’d just ask then. You can relax at least knowing you should be protected for now. It’s good that you contacted them and went in when you had the bleed.

SomeoneElse, she’s already had it 🙂

Thank you, yes I went for the anti d immediately when I needed it yesterday SomeoneElse my question was should I still have my routine one next Friday or is it too soon.
I was not scheduled to have another between routine one next week & delivery.
Thank you to everyone for their thoughts - they are similar to mine, I’ll ask the midwife when I see her Tuesday.
Thanks Flowers

Elouera sorry missed your question, I had (unscheduled) anti d yesterday as I had a slight bleed.

I'm rhesus negative and with my second I had to go in and have an unscheduled anti d due to a bleed but still had the scheduled one too. They told me you should have it after any bleed so I figure you can have them close together as
Some people have regular bleeds during pregnancy x

Nottsangel2015 · 16/05/2020 11:24

Obviously check with your midwife first though but I'd be inclined to say you would still need the scheduled one x

I am happy to have another Anti D - I just wonder if it would be more beneficial to postpone it for a couple of weeks @Nottsangel2015 and have it at maybe 30 weeks or 32 weeks.

Yes you still need the scheduled one.

newmum520 · 16/05/2020 11:45

I think I had about 5/6 anti d injections in this pregnancy, I had a couple for unplanned bleeds, a scheduled one, one when my waters broke and then one after delivery.

Have a look at the flow chart on page 6. You should have the routine prophylactic anti D at 28 weeks.
