Induction drip question

Hi,

If you are getting induced using an oxytocin drip do you need a catheter or can you use the bathroom. Also can you eat when the drip is in?

Thanks, trying to prepare myself fully for what is about to happen!

I had the OxyContin drip as part of my labour last year. I had an epidural along side it (which was bliss) and was able to control the epidural to the extent that I was able to get up and down to the toilet.

I didn't really consider food so I'm unsure of any restrictions on that (had been in labour for a long time by then) but I did drink lucozade and water.

I had the drip but didn’t have epidural and I didn’t have to have one I could walk around and use bathroom as normal. However once I was started on the drip they did say no eating!

I struggled to pee when I was in labour (and was in pain with a full bladder) so actually asked for a catheter. It didn't hurt me. I didn't feel like eating but had a few jelly babies! I ended up having a ECS anyway so would have needed catheter.

I had the drip induction in 2018 and i didnt have to have a catheter bit i did have to use a bed pan as i was on a monitor as well so i couldn't get up. I didnt have an epidural alongside it but had pethidine

I was on the drip for around ten hours straight. no epidural or catheter , no food only water was allowed ! but I remember my mil had to force me to get up to wee in the end I felt stuck to the bed on the monitors

I had the drip as well. Before it was dialled all the way up, I could still walk to the toilet and drink. I was feeling too queasy from nerves to eat, but it

Once things got going however, I was too hopped up on morphine to eat or drink. They did manage to get me on a commode, at some point, but I couldn't go, and they couldn't maintain monitoring of the baby, so I was got back to the bed pretty sharpish.

In labour you don't really tend to think about eating so I don't think that'll be a problem for you Smile

dochas06 · 15/05/2020 19:47

I used the bathroom and then a commode further on once I was onto the diamorphine! I ate and drank as I wanted, they just told me nothing ‘heavy’.
I had a scalp clip on baby for monitoring, so had pretty good freedom of movement if I took the pump with me

I didn't have a catheter with the drip. But no food. It increases your risk of needing surgery so water only.

Mrsbclinton · 15/05/2020 19:49

I had the drip and got the epidural so they put a catheter in when you get the epidural.

I wasnt allowed to eat, was told this was in case I might need a c section, however I didnt give birth in UK so it may be different policies in your hospital.

Hippoplatypus · 15/05/2020 19:51

I could get up to pee (no epidural)
Eating was the furthest thing from my mind! It all kicked off fairly quickly

userabcname · 15/05/2020 19:54

God I thought about food a lot in labour! I was bloody starving!!! But then I was in labour for 38 hours and on the drip so couldn't eat. Big big meal beforehand is my advice!

Fishfingersandwichplease · 15/05/2020 19:56

Had a drip which meant a catheter and only allowed water but to be honest neither of these things bothered me at all....well worth it to have an epidural

Squ1ggle · 15/05/2020 19:57

They advised me to eat before the drip as said I couldn't eat once it was started. No epidural so was able to use the toilet normally

LH1987 · 15/05/2020 19:59

Thank you all so much, I am not looking forward to the whole thing but I want to be prepared. It makes sense that I probably wont want to eat once it starts Grin

I gave birth in October and insisted I had my epidural put in before they started the drip Grin I could control the epidural using a button you can press every 20 minutes. For most of the Labour I was able to get us and use the toilet with help but towards the end I had to use the bed pan as I felt to wobbly on my feet which was fine...all dignity is out the window at this point! I wasn't allowed to eat for the duration but pretty soon after delievery I was bought some tea and toast ! Was great!

nikkijr1990 · 16/05/2020 00:21

They told me they didn't need to insert a catheter u less I absolutely couldn't pass urine myself! I struggled a bit towards the end but think it was more awkward positioning on the bed pan! Overall positive experience after the scare stories you hear about inductions ! It was a breeze compared to my first all natural labour so much calmer and relaxed.....but I think that was more to do with refusing to have the drip before i he the epidural 😂😂
