What is the role of a maternity support worker?

Hi.

So I am currently 12 weeks pregnant and have received a message from a maternity support worker saying that she has been asked to offer 'extra support' during and after pregnancy. I have a long history of mental health problems and I am wondering if this could be the reason why?

Has anyone had a maternity support worker involved with their pregnancy/after and how did they support you?

Thank you!

Maternity support workers are basically healthcare assistants with additional training specific to maternity. They can do urinalysis, blood pressures, venepuncture, general health advice, breastfeeding support, her prick tests, postnatal checks, amongst other things, depending on the Trust they work for. I'd imagine that in your area the MSWs are being used to take pressure off of midwives by offering additional emotional support and being able to offer continuity of carer.

Hi, I've come across family support workers for pregnant women with mental health history who offer extra support throughout pregnancy and post natal. Sounds like that - probably called something slightly different in different areas. I think just an opportunity for you to ask more questions and access support if struggling/anxious or worried.

Best of luck
