What was your bmi out of curiosity as mine was 32 at booking in appt and I haven't been told about any extra scans (I'm currently 27 weeks)?
I wouldn't worry though, i'd just see them as extra chances to see your little one.

It's standard with 'high' bmi, so a bmi over 35 I think is a risk factor which can trigger extra scans. Higher bmi can lead to a few complications - smaller or bigger babies, GD being some of the more common. It's standard, same with other risk factors they check at booking and midwife appointments.

If it makes you feel any better I have gestational diabetes and before I got pregnant I was a size 10 and bmi of around 23 I think, so I don’t think it is just your weight that can cause it as mine was ok according to their guidelines, but I definitely have it and have been on the strict diet and medication for weeks now, it’s hormones that cause that one in particular. Just be glad you’re getting some extra scans offered as I’ve read on here they’re cancelling a lot of peoples’ due to the virus! You’ll be fine Smile

Liverbird77 · 14/05/2020 16:20

If they think you're at risk of gestational diabetes then surely they'd have offered either the gtt or the HBA1C test by 28 weeks?

rocknrosie · 14/05/2020 16:40

@liverbird77 i'm 22w tomorrow so maybe they're just being over the top? lol

It’s for people with a BMI over 35 typically. I am also getting them, and glad to have the extra opportunities to see baby. Try not to worry, your weight will not impact your birth or your baby x

Quiffy · 14/05/2020 16:48

I've had the same growth scans booked in from when I was 12 weeks. I think it's pretty standard for higher BMI, although some were being canceled due to Covid. I'm just thinking of it as "woo extra baby seeing opportunities".

thanks everyone

Yes growth scans due to BMI. I got them with ds and am this time too. I got fed up today with the consultant saying "your weight" "your age" about a million times tbh. But as @Quiffy says it is extra scans so you see the baby more and in some ways it is good they keep a closer eye on us. I am very overweight but not unhealthy (if that can possibly make sense) my glucose is fine, BP fine, good stamina d pretty hardy. My first pregnancy was a total breeze despite having a high BMI. Wasn't bothered at all till 2 weeks overdue. No gestational diabetes.

I think they think if your bmi is high your baby will be huge or something, which is not true.

This time is not so straightforward but I am 10 yrs older and just feeling sick tbh.

Extra scans are positive. Congrats on your pregnancy.

I think I fell pregnant as I was going to slimming world and losing weight and now I am stuck for 9 months lol
X

Hi also got GD and in my class session it was explained GD is nothing to do with eating badly it's how your babies placenta reacts to sugars .My bmi was 28 before getting pregnant so I wasnt huge ! I also know a very slim almost underweight lady who had it so please don't worry ! I'm having extra scans as I'm having twins and love them ! Although getting harder to see them properly on the scans now they are bigger !

MrsRose2018 · 15/05/2020 09:27

Hi OP

Im 31 weeks and have extra scans at 32, 34 and 36 cos I’m a larger mamma with a BMI of 35.

It varies from trust to trust but some do it bmi 30+ and some do it 35+!

If you don’t want them I’m sure you could refuse but personally I’m loving the fact I get to see my boy more often! Most women don’t get to!

Also sadly it is true that the higher your BMI the “higher risk” (albeit marginal” your pregnancy is so you will need extra checks and a gestational diabetes test x
