Hiya,

What's everyone's experiences with having an anterior placenta? Last week I was getting kicks during the day but this week I'm not feeling as much and feel like I have to wait until an evening to feel anything and it's making me really anxious!

My experience is that it's so very frustrating and anxiety inducing!!

Im a FTM, 27 weeks with a high anterior placenta. I didn't feel a thing till over 22 weeks and even now, it's different every day.

I do feel her in some way everyday but it goes from regular, strong kicks all day one day to the gentlest of flutters the next. Some days I go hours without feeling a thing, some days it's only when I lie still on my side for an hour or it's just early morning/late at night with nothing inbetween, other days it's constant.

Several times I've nearly rang up concerned with lack of movement but she moves just in time!

My midwife said it's totally normal with an anterior placenta and that 24-28 weeks is the worst time as you've started feeling movement but there's no pattern yet. At this stage, baby still has lots of room to move around so the slightest change in position can make a big difference in what you can feel.

It's very stressful but I take some comfort in knowing that it's normal.

(Obviously as an add on to this....always trust your gut. If something doesn't seem right, ring up. Better to be safe than sorry)

Thank you @sel2223

It's definitely an anxiety rollercoaster but what you've said is very reassuring.

I keep feeling myself it's normal at this stage to still not have a pattern but it's still stressful.

Last week I was feeling the baby kick on an afternoon and evening then this week I've only really felt him move on an afternoon/evening and even then it's been faint and I'm second guessing it even though I know.

Today I can't say I've felt anything at all and I'm getting worried. I've done some star jumps and had huge icy drink. I think I'll wait another half an hour and call the hospital

I cried over not feeling baby movements just a few weeks ago as I have an anterior placenta too. I didn’t feel a single thing until 24+2 and then had a couple of days at around 25/26 weeks where I didn’t feel anything and panicked again. I’m now 29 weeks with an established pattern and very strong movement. You will be ok 😊

Thank you @Birdy1991

I'm close to tears now 😫 I'm such a worrier anyways but I guess it is just normal at this stage.

The next few weeks couldn't come quick enough x

That said if you have any concerns, I would say always ring your midwife, as I did and they were always very kind and understanding with my worries! 😊

@snch I really feel for you. I spent ages wishing I had a posterior placenta. I felt strange that the baby was growing and when I went to triage they could hear the baby moving with the heart rate monitor but I couldn’t feel it, so strange. I’m sure you’ll notice the difference in the next few weeks x

snch · 13/05/2020 19:22

@Birdy1991 it's so stressful isn't it! Lockdown probably isn't helping feel like I'm sat waiting to feel movements all day.

I'm the same, if I start to worry I have a little pace up and down for ten minutes, drink a freezing cold glass of water and then lay down and I nearly always feel something x

BabyB19 · 13/05/2020 19:30

Also 25 weeks with anterior placenta x

I’m 31/32 weeks and still struggling with this! It’s the change from strong, wince-making kicks to just little flutters very low down that worries me, but I’ve had this pattern shift a couple of times now. I get very busy with my other kids then panic that I haven’t felt anything all day!

Hope you're ok OP, I agree call your midwife if you're really worried. I was asked to go in at 24 weeks as I had called as movement had stopped, I also have an anterior placenta. Everything was fine, but very glad I went in.

snch · 13/05/2020 20:16

After trying everything to get him moving I went in to get checked has been laid down for 30 seconds and he kicked twice 😂 awful worrying but so pleased everything is ok

I know exactly how you feel! My anterior placenta drove me mad - endless worrying and crying. I would guzzle ice cold fizzy drinks and lie perfectly still, desperate for a little twitch! I was monitored for reduced movements 4 times. Each time it was fine, and the midwives were lovely about it and never made me feel like I was wasting anyone’s time. It’s so hard when you’ve never done this before and everyone and everything online tells you that you should be feeling “regular” movements by a certain date and you don’t! I didn’t feel any definite movements until 20 weeks and only at 32 weeks did I feel movements every day and even then they weren’t the painful jabs some people describe. There was never a regular pattern for me my entire pregnancy, so in the end I just had to ask myself “have I felt him move at all today?”. If you’re worried, I would always call.

Glad everything was ok @snch.
