Does anyone have any recommendations on the best breast pumps that aren’t too pricy ?
First time mum here , hoping to breast feed and would love to express too.

Bella baby on amazon is one of the pumps recommended by the infant feeding team at my Local hospital. It’s about £40 on amazon

I have the calypso double pump, worked so well for me.
Will be using it for number 2!

The medela swing is good, its expensive but i managed to get it on offer for about £70

Laura1348 · 14/05/2020 22:33

I'm in the same boat- no idea what's good or not!

Pygmyseahorse · 14/05/2020 23:55

I hired a hospital grade medela last time which worked well but this time I think I'll invest in a double as I was combination feeding/mostly expressing last time and pumping both at the same time would be easier

Not sure which yet.. The elvie seems good but the price is eye watering! I've heard good things about calypso, lasinoh and the medela was good last time so I'm following this with interest!

Tommee tippee electrical one is great so comfy easy to use and I'd get a full large bottle off each boob!

Laura1348 · 16/05/2020 08:17

@BooMamaBear would you be able to tell me a bit more about it. It's a brand I recognise and with lockdown i think that's what I'm going to have to trust.
Thank you

I'd second the BellaBaby, my sister was recommended this by the hospital team when she had my nephew who has SB. She said it's better than the madela she used in the hospital. I've got myself one this time, haven't used it yet but there are so many great reviews.

BooMamaBear · 16/05/2020 23:33

What do you want to know - if you go on their website it's got a gull description - it comes with a sterile box so it's really easy to clean just put all the non electrical bits in with a bit of water and microwave it!
It has 3 settings depending on how much pressure you want I found it really easy and comfortable!
I got mine 4 years ago so some bits may have changed slightly!! Xx

@BooMamaBear thanks. This is great. Just wanted an actual personal opinion rather than the generic internet stuff! Thank you

FirstTimeBumps · 17/05/2020 09:11

@Pygmyseahorse I have the Elvie. I hate it! I also have an Ameda Lactaline Double which I got before the Elvie which I use. The Elvie has been used a handful of times and boxed back up. I'm going to try it again this time round but I'm not holding out hope.

legalseagull · 17/05/2020 09:25

I LOVED the Elvie. So quiet and you can just carry on walking around with it inside your bra. They're expensive but you can find second hand. It can seem a bit marmite, but for me it was brilliant and got more milk that any other pump I had tried with my previous babies. They sell second hand for about half price so if you didn't get on with it you could sell it on

BeMorePacific · 17/05/2020 11:51

@legalseagull ah I’m glad to hear a positive review for Elvie. I love the fact it’s hands free. But it isn’t getting a great suction review. x

crazychemist · 17/05/2020 13:11

Loved my Tommee tippee one when I had DD1. Really comfortable and quick. I had a single pump, and there were a few times that I thought I should have got a double for speed (I often leaked from the side I hadn’t pumped yet), but they were much more expensive so I never bothered.

WeeScottishWife · 06/06/2020 15:02

When did you all start using breast pumps? My husband is really keen to be able to help do feeds as early as possible, to give me more potential sleeping time, but I've heard quite mixed things about what's possible and would love to hear people's actual experiences.

LASandOtto · 06/06/2020 16:27

@WeeScottishWife I was going to ask the same.

  1. When would it be reasonable to buy one, or is renting one an option? If you don't know if you can breastfeed, is it better to wait before buying one anyway?
  1. If your partner wants to take over a feed (I've also read to only do this cautiously from 6 weeks (?) I think (so much to read), what other equipment is needed? A bottle warmer? Containers to keep expressed milk in 🤯🤯

I think I need to order one of those La Leiche League books!

edgeware · 06/06/2020 16:38

@WeeScottishWife @LASandOtto you can use a pump when you feel a bit more comfortable with feeding, it can take a little while. I’d recommend getting a silicone Haka or similar pump because it can catch the drips from the other breast (they are super leaky at first).

  1. You could leave it in the box unopened and return if breastfeeding doesn’t work out
  1. just a pump (haka or electric) and milk expressing bags. And 1-2 newborn bottles. We did it from 3 weeks I think, because I was worried about nipple confusion. We never had an issue mixing breast and bottle. Doing partner feeds at night doesn’t really work though 😅 your breasts get too full. You could have him do a dream feed at 10pm so you can get an early night
CupcakesK · 06/06/2020 16:48

I second a Haakaa, or similar silicon pump - these are less than £12. Only suitable for expressing enough for 1 feed though.

You’ll also need sterilising equipment for the bottles etc - if you’re only going to be bottle feeding once a day then multi-use bags that you put in the microwave (e.g. tommee tippee) are cheaper/smaller than a while sterilising kit

LASandOtto · 06/06/2020 16:50

Thanks @CupcakesK @edgeware I appreciate your comments and insight!

Great advice!

New2020 · 06/06/2020 22:54
