Private Scan - 8 weeks

Hi all. I have booked a private scan in a couple of weeks I will be 7+6 just for reassurance really and to see before 12 weeks. I then have my midwife booking appointment the day after. Just a question probably silly though! Should I tell midwife I got a private scan or do they get funny about it would you still get your NHS 12 weeks scan if they know this?

You are still entitled to your 12 week NHS of course! You can tell your midwife if you want, but your 12 week scan is your dating scan so it's very important that they measure you and get your estimated due dates.

Private scans are just reassurance scans as an additional bit of reassurance but you still 100% need your NHS one as that is most important x

That's really up to you whether you tell your midwife. You don't have to if you don't want to.

You'll still have the 12-wk scan as this is when they check for potential issues that wouldn't be visible on an 8-wk scan.

For what it's worth I don't think there's anything scandalous about having an 8-wk scan if you can afford it. It's very natural for you to want to see the baby and hear the heartbeat, especially as 8wk is when the mc risk starts dropping significantly.

The only situation where it would be advisable to mention the 8-wk scan is if they detect any issues, or if the date doesn't match your LMP dates. The latter is not 'ecessarily anything to worry about as LMP dates assume you have a textbook 28 day cycle, which isn't the case for many people !

Thanks so much I just wasnt sure if they would be funny about , I suppose if everything is fine at 8 weeks scan I will just say nothing 😊 it's my first baby so I just couldn't wait the 12 weeks as dont think it will feel real till I see something on scan. 2 weeks 2 days to go 🤞 xx

When I was pregnant with DD I had an early scan, she asked for dates of period to calculate how many weeks and I told her about the scan, she asked if there was 1 baby and if everything was well. Wasn't funny about it at all😊

Some people (like me) had viability scans via the NHS anyways. I personally found it a reassurance. Its also very helpful if you do get any bleeding or pain down the line. If the scan showed a single, pregnancy in the uterus, then the pain/bleeding if far less likely to be an ectopic/loss of a twin or other issue.
