Scared to tell my employer I'm pregnant!

Hi all, just wanting some reassurance and advice really!
I have my 12 week scan this Thursday, I'll be 12+6, and am hoping if all is well to start telling everyone(finally!).

However I'm absolutely terrified to tell my employer. I work in a dental practice and there are only four of us, me and one other being the only ones employed full time. I have quite a lot of responsibility and a lot of my jobs even my boss doesn't know how to complete! I'm scared to drop this news on her especially with everything that's going on at the moment. I am currently furloughed and I know how awful it is for small businesses such as my work are struggling to cope.

I know I should be thinking of myself and my baby and my happiness first, which I am!, but I'm so worried how there going to react!

Just to add, I'm also obviously due to the current covid situation at going to her to tell her over the phone, which I find even worse! I'd much rather have a meeting at work however this won't be possible, again as work is currently closed and we are all furloughed

OP you shouldn’t be feeling like this. Is your manager unreasonable?

SomeoneElseEntirelyNow · 12/05/2020 07:10

What exactly are you afraid of?

Elephantonascooter · 12/05/2020 07:13

I believe you don't technically have to tell them until you give in your Mat B1 form (UK).
There's nothing to be worried about, I'm sure they'll be pleased for you

Loladisco · 12/05/2020 07:16

Congratulations on your baby!

You will be fine. It's easy to feel like we are almost irreplaceable in the work place when we are in a job we are good at, and feel "how will they cope without me". I've (slightly smugly) felt that every time I've left a job. And you know what, they cope just fine. They get someone else in, temporary or permanent and life goes on, the wheels keep turning. They days go by and they manage.

Obviously the general situation is quite different and unique now, but I hope you're boss is still understanding and supportive of you.

Good luck for your scan

It may be inconvenient for them but they'll manage. What would they do if you had a car accident or got CV ? They'd have to fibs a solution. Life goes on.

I'd tell them soon because this is causing you anxiety, and because they'll appreciate the heads up so they have time to make the necessary arrangements for the business.

Good luck! You will be fine, I found the bit before telling the worst. I was going to wait until after Christmas as I found out a few days before we finished. The afternoon of my last day I decided to rip the plaster off so to speak and told my boss because I didn't want it hanging over me over Christmas. (due to my job I had to disclose as soon as possible)

Remember they have 5-6 months to prepare to cover your role. It's not like it you are dropping off the face of the world tomorrow, they would get less notice if you left for an new job.

Clo1997cc · 12/05/2020 07:56

Thank you everyone for your kind, reassuring comments, I'm definitely going to tell them the day after my scan Smile
My manager isn't unreasonable, I just know it will be an extra stress for her on top of everything else to find someone to fill in my role, unfortunately the business has been through a lot the past year, we had a flood last year, so it seems I'm throwing something else in the mix!
I understand it can sound silly to some people however I see my manager as a friend aswell as an employer,so I'm hoping I can do as much as I can before I go on maternity leave to help out

Hi I just wanted to drop by and say I feel exactly the same, I'm new to my job and I didnt know I was pregnant when I started, due to being at home I've decided to tell them after my 20 week scan, many reasons but I feel it's a better time for me. My boss isn't unreasonable but its just the situation has but everything in to focus at the moment!

Pauline91 · 12/05/2020 08:45

Hello, sorry not much help but just wanted to say I feel exactly the same! I am currently shielding due to unrelated to pregnancy health problems so I won't return to work until July 1st at the earliest. I already feel guilty about that, although it's not my fault and out of my control. I just feel like I will go back to work to tell them i'm pregnant and be off again a few months after. I have my first scan in two weeks time but I don't want to tell them over the phone I would rather do it face to face on my return. There is talk of redundancy and I am worried that being furloughed for so long and then maternity leave will make them get rid of me. I am the only one in my job role and we are a really small team all of us good at our individual jobs so I think it would make me a easy option if that makes sense. Trying to just not worry and just taking a day at a time.
