Breech baby at 28 weeks

Hi everyone,

I'm 28 weeks pregnant and had a growth scan at the hospital on Thursday. Everything is fine and the sonographer said that the baby "is growing beautifully". I was massively relieved, but later that day I read on the scan notes that the baby was in breech position.

It worries me quite a bit. I know I still have three more months to go, but the window of likelihood for the baby to turn is getting smaller and smaller.

I really would like a natural birth and dread a C-Section.

Can any of you ladies encourage me, where you in a similiar position and had a positive outcome? Also, what exercises did you do to turn the baby ?

I've ordered a gym ball to sit on as I read that helps especially when you have a bad posture like me sitting on the sofa. I also went on all fours this morning in my bed reading my book.

I know there's exercises like forward leaning inversion, but I want to wait until my midwife appointment next week to discuss with her if it's safe.

It seems like quite a dangerous position to be in if you don't know what you're doing.

I also try to be active and walk a lot in the park, do you think that can help as well?

Thanks for any advice!

I had twins and one of my twins was breech until 33w, he suddenly turned (born 36w)not sure how as it must have been pretty crammed in there! So they can turn until quite late.

Totally normal, don’t stress, your baby will be turning back and forth all the time at this stage. Wouldn’t worry about it at all until at least 34 weeks and even then they mostly turn.

Thesearmsofmine · 09/05/2020 10:12

It’s normal for babies to change position right up to birth. So at 28 weeks I wouldn’t worry at all!

Danni91 · 09/05/2020 10:15

If they dont turn, there is a procedure the hospital can do to manually turn baby. Its not always effective though and can come with risks so they dont do it until super late.

28 weeks is really early to have yourself worrying about it try not to panic until 32+

My last was a breech and they wasnt fazed until 36 weeks. She never did turn but the c section wasnt a bad experience either!

I wouldn’t worry , it’s still early on!

I was breech until 35 weeks and then 3 days before my 36 appointment he turned himself around ( I felt it as it happened).

At 36 weeks if baby is still breech they will book you into the hospital where they will try to manually turn baby around. I believe that procedure has a 50% success rate .

And even if that doesn’t work it’s not uncommon for baby to turn themselves around at the last minute .

I'm 29 weeks and baby is transverse. Midwife wasn't even slightly concerned x

BeMorePacific · 09/05/2020 18:07

@MichelleOR84 that’s amazing that you felt the baby turn! Love that x

2 out of 3 of my children were breech until late in the pregnancy, both turned and arrived naturally. Please dont stress yet.

SpiltMilk100 · 09/05/2020 18:17

I had a growth scan at 32 weeks and baby was breach. I then had to have another scan at 33 weeks. I actually felt it move the night before and said to the woman before she even scanned me that I thought the baby had gone head down, and I was right. Far too early to be worrying.

Emberfoot · 09/05/2020 19:33

I am 33wks and whilst my baby is breech, he moved from transverse to full on head up bum down breech in one sitting - I even felt him do it. I am not gonna worry yet, as if he can do that in one evening he can move up till the last minute imo.

suriv · 09/05/2020 20:01

I think I was around 34 weeks when my first turned. I was sat next to a young male colleague when it happened. It was an almighty movement that made me gasp and wince. Colleague jumped up and screamed thinking I was in labour.

thosethreewords · 09/05/2020 23:13

I'm currently 34 weeks and baby is breech. I definitely wouldn't worry at your stage - I'm starting to get a really tiny bit more worried for me!
But as PP have said, I know full well that babies can turn upto the day they're born. I still think at the moment I've got more chance of her turning than not turning and your odds will be even greater.

Fivebyfive2 · 09/05/2020 23:35

Hi op, try not to worry! My baby was sideways virtually all the way through my pregnancy. At just before 36 weeks he moved position to breeched and my waters broke! I was admitted and monitored, really well looked after. At 36 weeks I had ac section and it went brilliantly; both baby and I were fine, he was perfect and I recovered very quickly. I just wanted to tell you my story to hopefully give some reassurance. It's very likely your baby will get into the right position, but in the event that they don't and you do have a c section, all will very likely be fine too. Xxx

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 09/05/2020 23:38

DC2 was breech until 36w. At that point it was one of many factors where an ELCS was agreed to. I'm pretty sure he turned a night or two after that point! At 28 weeks they said not to worry about it, they often turn well before 34w and if not there's the turning procedure which I can't remember the name of if wanted but that would be discussed nearer the time.
