Bleeding at six weeks, what do I do?

Good morning everyone,

I've had some very light spotting since finding out I was pregnant but put it down to implantation bleeding or suspected (undiagnosed) cervical entropion/erosion.

This morning though I had a big blob of brown blood, exactly like the start of a period. This means I've lost the embryo, right?

I'm not sure what to do now. NHS website says to get in touch with doc or midwife immediately about any blood, but I'm not registered with a midwife yet and as I only just moved into the area I only registered with a GP on Thursday, and they said it'll middle of next week before I'm fully on the system, and anyway they're closed today, so I'm at a loose end :(

I know I probably don't need to be seen and it's just a normal miscarriage that will happen on its own, but I'm worried about an ectopic or something else sinister. Can I just ring a hospital midwifery department and beg to be seen?

@ammyjanee13 Sorry, cross post, I'm really sorry you're going through this, wishing you the absolute best for your appointment tomorrow xx

@coalcraft glad its stopped, unfortunately mine hasn't. I'm pretty sure I'm losing it.

Hoping they will invite me in for a scan when they call me on monday.

I'm not in any pain but the blood is bright red and getting heavier so I've lost hope.

Good luck to those going through the same.

This may sound harsh but there really is little they can do at this point so it's a wait and see game.

I've had two ectopics and both ruptured - a little bit of spotting and cramping doesn't mean it's ectopic - far from it - Trust me if it's ectopic you'll know about it as it feels like someone is ripping your ovaries out of your body and it's an intense one sided pain at hip height which means you can't hardly stand let alone walk. I've had miscarriages - several - and that pain is more like intense period like cramping lower down

CoalCraft · 09/05/2020 14:36

@Skybooks so so sorry to hear that :( really hope you are able to get a scan so you know exactly how things stand. I know it will be a really hard wait for you Flowers

@ivfgottostaypositive It doesn't sound harsh as you are completely right. I already have a plan (go to urgent care if in severe pain or bleeding heavily, otherwise ring GP once I'm fully registered and ask for scan to confirm one way or the other) and until then there's nothing I can do, so no point worrying. It is easier said than done, but am trying to keep busy.

I'm so sorry about your ectopics and miscarriages, thank you for sharing your experiences. So far I don't have even mild pain, so I'm holding onto hopr. Sorry I don't know your current situation re pregnancy but wherever you are in the process I wish you all the best.

Bleeding's back but lighter than before, and I've now developed a mild pain in the lower right of my abdomen, so I'm starting to really worry about an ectopic 😣

Thing is the pain feels more like a burning than a cramping, and it is mild, and it could be in my head :(

Am considering ringing 111, or would that be too much? I just know that the earlier they're detected the better

If you're worried, then I think you should call.

ivfgottostaypositive · 09/05/2020 18:13

Of course I'm no expert but it doesn't sound like an ectopic - the pain will be higher up towards your hip bone - draw a horizontal line across form your belly button and you've got the general area - that's where my scars are when they went into get my ectopics on both sides. If it's lower - in between your pelvis then it's normal pregnancy related cramping (or worst case miscarriage)

Here's how it will go with 111 - they'll say if you are concerned to go to a&e - the waiting times should be short at the moment so may only be a couple of hours until they triage you - they won't scan you today or even tomorrow as they don't have the staff or equipment available for that on a weekend. You MAY get an appointment for a scan next week with your EPU

Even if you are bleeding heavily they really won't do anything - unless your filling a pad quicker than every 15 mins then they won't admit you/see you (I went with my first miscarriage at 12 weeks and although passing clots this was my experience and I don't think it's unusual in other hospitals/trusts)

Even if you see a GP next week the process/timescales May not be any quicker. Most EPUs won't offer reassurance scans especially at the moment and they'll only see patients same day if they are admitted via a&e if they think it serious enough

Otherwise the general response is to manage it at home 💐

Solasum · 09/05/2020 18:19

I bled quite a lot at this stage and went to the EPU fearing the worse. That baby is now six and next to me. Everything crossed for you 💐

ammyjanee13 · 09/05/2020 18:33

If you are worried then call 111 but it doesn't sound too worrying to me.

I've got bad period pains and heavy bleeding currently (like I would get if I was on a heavy period day) and the only time I can get an appointment is tomorrow morning. I phoned on the midwives Friday mid morning and told them of my symptoms and at that time they were mild, she told me it was old blood and the pain was most likely ligament pain but if things got worse to call back and then they would refer me to the local EPU.

You are possibly thinking too much into it, have a bath and early night or something that will distract you.

If anything try and call your local hospitals midwife section - they'll be able to help/reassure you rather than calling 111 :) xx

I had bleeding from 6-8 weeks, just on wiping, dark browny colour, turned out to be implantation. DD is currently playing besides me.
I also had a miscarriage when I had no bleeding so try not to worry Flowers

JadeRuby1988 · 09/05/2020 19:01

I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks and I had painful cramps from when I started bleeding. The pain lasted a week 5 days until I passed the sac. If you aren't in lots of pain then stay positive! Smile

Skybooks · 11/05/2020 09:31

@CoalCraft how are you? Any news.

CoalCraft · 12/05/2020 11:20

Hi all, thanks for all your experiences, advice and reassurance. I know I'm sounding like a broken record but your words help so much and I'm so grateful.

Just a quick update in case anyone is wondering. I decided against calling 111 in the end. The bleeding is still going on but has slowed to a very light trickle and I'm still essentially pain-free. As far as I can tell I'm still pregnant and I'm behaving as such,

Crossing everything I have that it's not ectopic and next week I'll see a wee little baby.

Thanks very much for asking after me @Skybooks

@Skybooks sorry I meant to ask, how was your appointment yesterday?

OP posts:
Skybooks · 12/05/2020 14:26

@CoalCraft I spoke to epu and they said without pain or heavy bleeding (soaking through pads) they wouldn't want me to come in as there is covid in hospital.

I had 24hrs ish of bright red bleeding and I dknt feel pregnant, I'm certain I've lost it.

No clots or pains so I've booked a private scan tomorrow evening to confirm it's all gone.

I really hope you keep going the way you are going.

CoalCraft · 12/05/2020 16:22

@Skybooks I'm so sorry to hear that Flowers

I know it seems hopeless but I'm crossing my fingers for you that you get some happy news tomorrow. If not, I hope it'll give you closure xx

@CoalCraft I had my scan last night, total miscarriage. Nothing left. I'm praying you have a healthy pregnancy and no more worries.

CoalCraft · 14/05/2020 09:29

I'm so sorry @Skybooks my heart goes out to you, it really does, these things are so cruel Sad Flowers
