When to pump and dump

Not planning to for a while but when I can eventually have a few drinks (with mum looking after LO) just curious as to when you should pump and dump? The baby will be on expressed milk bottles in the evening so my milk supply will be up, do I pump and dump that night or wait til morning? I'm confused with it all

You don’t need to pump and dump. The amount of alcohol in your breastmilk is the amount of alcohol in your blood. There will simply not be enough in there to affect the baby.

SorrelBlackbeak · 07/05/2020 22:19

Don't bother. You're fine to feed as the level in your milk is the same as the level in your blood so it's very diluted. Have a look on Kellymom.

rottiemum88 · 07/05/2020 22:19

The % alcohol in your milk is minuscule, even after consuming quite a lot. So it's really not necessary to dump the milk if you choose to express when not feeding your baby.

That's ladies, very helpful. I asked the health visitor during a telephone consultation and she told me at first I have to wait 48 hours! Then came back to me and said 3 to 4 hours so left me more confused. I've been having 1 or 2 drinks atm but hopefully by my birthday in July I can have a good few drinks but didn't want to affect baby

That's total rubbish. You can bf after alcohol - the danger is about falling asleep on your baby/ not being attentive / dropping them etc

BeMorePacific · 07/05/2020 23:17

Agree with what all other mums have said. The danger is being drunk with a baby, not contaminated milk.
So enjoy yourself guilt free xxx

You do not need to, such an annoying myth. They did an amazingly study, testing milk at different times during/after drink. Jack Newman publicised it.

Tigertrees · 07/05/2020 23:22

At my antenatal class they told us to pump and dump, and even then (13 years ago) this was already disproven.
You may well want to pump though if you miss a feed in the night as you will blow up.

JeDeFloupFlee · 07/05/2020 23:24

If you need to pump and are worried about using it, put it in babys bath :)

Heygirlheyboy · 07/05/2020 23:36

There is no need to worry, it has been proven that it is OK!

Hopefully you have fb OP.

No need to pump and dump as pp said the real danger is if you co sleep or get drunk where you can't care for the baby

CoolNoMore · 08/05/2020 00:08

48hrs?! I properly lolled...

My best friend used to drink as she was breastfeeding, figuring that the milk was already made and this was the longest possible time before more milk was made. The image of her with a baby on her boob and a glass of red wine in her hand was so spectacular that I asked if I could take a picture...

'DON'T YOU F*ING DARE!'

But yeah, no need to dump. Be careful though, my tolerance is waaaay lower after 9 months of teetotaling!

Shmithecat2 · 08/05/2020 00:12

As others have said, no need at all.

@CoolNoMore, I too would quite often have a glass of wine in my hand and ds on my breast.

CoolNoMore · 08/05/2020 00:41

@Shmithecat2 it certainly looked classier than me with my beer, five months later Grin

Jesskir89 · 08/05/2020 05:07

Thanks ladies I shall enjoy a guilt free evening once lockdown is over :) I'm not on Facebook but thank you for the link. In babies bath, that's a new one to me but thanks again everyone

Agree with PP, please don’t pump and dump!!

Heygirlheyboy · 08/05/2020 09:21

My friend has a picture of her with a G&T after a particularly arduous day! Grin

PotteringAlong · 08/05/2020 09:50

You could argue that drinking whilst breastfeeding is the ideal time to do it! It’s not running straight down your throat and into your boob!
