Hello all!

I'm about to undertake a PhD in Anthropology in London centred around pregnancy (yay!). I'm seeking people who would be willing to chat with me to help me develop questions.

Part of my approach is to be as collaborative as possible, and I'd love to hear what you think are aspects of being pregnant which deserve study!

Let me know if you would be open to chatting, or know anybody who'd like to talk Flowers Smile

All the best,
C

What was the research question you started with? Just ‘about pregnancy’ seems a little vague? Not to be rude I’m just interested!

CKB20 · 07/05/2020 11:55

@BuffaloCauliflower My proposal was centred about the intersections between race, embodiment, pregnancy and welfare (specifically the NHS).

However, at the moment I'm looking to speak to anyone who is or has been pregnant in the UK and have been involved with in the NHS during their pregnancy to help shape my research further, and perhaps open up questions I may not have considered.

Hope this provides some clarification! Thanks for your response Smile Star

What would you like to know?

CKB20 · 08/05/2020 10:42

@Mo81 Hello! I'm looking for relatively informal discussions. They could be around these themes:

Experiences with NHS staff and what advice you might have been given by healthcare professionals. How you might have followed or adapted this advice. Feelings about access to free healthcare during your pregnancy and the importance of medical support and advice.

Where else did you find advice and support during your pregnancy and the role of online forums (such as mumsnet!) or family, partners and friends.

How you felt your body changing and how this might have made you think about your body in the world, for example, might you inhabit spaces differently or 'feel' your body in new ways.

How you feel about 'motherhood' as a social identity. What does it mean to be a mother, or a 'good' mother and how might have these ideas developed throughout a pregnancy.

As I am in the early stages of PhD training I'm really looking to chat more informally to also help me shape some questions and themes. I thought mumsnet could be a fruitful place to explore -- what do you think are aspects of being pregnant which deserve academic attention?

I hope this helps! If anyone would like to send me a direct message I'd love to hear from you.

Caroline Smile
