Needing a wee constantly and very thirsty

Hi,

I was hoping for some views on how I am feeling at the moment as this is my first baby, none of my friends have kids and my sister had an ideal pregnancy that she sailed through with barely any complaints!

I am 14 weeks and really struggling with my constant need to go for a wee. I am waking between 4-5 times every night to go to the toilet and that isn’t counting at least 2-3 wees between the time I get into bed and fall asleep (usually about an hour). Just now eating my dinner I had to stop eating 4 times to go to the loo.

I am feeling very thirsty with a dry throat and mouth and this can improve for a short time (an hour or 2) if I down a pint of water. I feel that I am drinking enough throughout the day but my BMI is 29 and I’m also mixed race from a Black Caribbean background which I know is a risk factor for gestational diabetes.

Seeing the midwife next week anyway and I will bring it up then, I just wondered whether this is usual in pregnancy or whether I should consider contacting the midwife before my appointment at the end of next week?

Thanks :-)

Peeing more and frequent thirst are definitely signs of gestational diabetes, so it may be worth ringing your midwife to tell them your symptoms.

I’d say ring your midwife. I had GD and was peeing a lot/thirsty and tired but just put down to pregnancy.
You’re correct in that you’re high risk - I was tested as had high BMI and my dad had type 2 but I also remember them asking my partners ethnicity as he’s Caribbean as that was a risk factor.

It does sound like the symptoms of GD - speak to your midwife as for sure hopefully they can maybe get you booked in for a GTT test earlier than the usual time for testing (I don't think they usually test till about 24 weeks). If you do have it, the sooner you know the better so you can start to eat the right things and/or have some medication to help you along. I have GD, I was tested as a bit older 39 and had a BMI of 31 and found out at my 24 week GTT test I think (now 37 weeks) but I didn't have any symptoms until much later on in my pregnancy (now I'm thirsty and peeing all the time!). if you do have it, I can highly recommend www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk web page and also the Facebook page is amazing for support and advice and recipes etc.- unfortunately the NHS advice on GD isn't great - they tend to give you Type 2 diabetes dietary advice (still having things like cereal, toast, porridge, OJ, which most GD women can't tolerate) so if you do have it, check out the website I mentioned instead, will help massively. Good luck! Flowers

I'd call your midwife in the morning to discuss it before the bank holiday weekend. It does sound like it could be gestational diabetes.

Thanks for all of the advice, really helpful. Will call the midwife tomorrow Flowers

Hi @Phiphi123 you sound really similar to me - same heritage and I’ve been having the same symptoms, my BMI is a little lower, it’s 20.
I’m 17 weeks and only in the last week have I been considering that it could be GD and am going to talk to my midwife but I wasn’t sure how early it could start?
It’s worth also getting your urine checked, I have had a UTI that I had to have antibiotics for when I was 13/14 weeks and the only symptom was the constant weeing but turned out I needed antibiotics.

Catlover10 · 07/05/2020 00:18

I had similar symptoms especially the frequent urination which I still have, I’m up about 5 times a night as well. I have gestational diabetes so it is worth mentioning earlier and you may want to take a quick look at some of the diet guidelines online just incase too.

Hi, Im up between 6-8 times during the night peeing and the thirst is insane too. I had tests for GD, did not have it and consultant said i was just unlucky with a smaller bladder and the way the baby was sitting. Good luck 🥰

Thanks for all of the advice. The midwife is refusing to screen me for GD at 14 weeks but has agreed to test a urine sample for a UTI.
