Medication aversions

I've been quite lucky so far and haven't gone off any foods but I am finding that if I take non coated medication (like my hay fever tablets) I'm rushing off to the loo and throwing it back up..
I feel a bit guilty seeking medical advice during this time. Has anyone else ever had this problem? My hay fever is starting to take its toll on me now though 😂

I have severe sickness and nausea, wretching so much so I am not tolerating food or much liquids but medication is same as you, none of mine are coated and I'm struggling with them and the size of my pregnancy multivitamin :( meds I am on are essntial and I have antisickness meds to take to keep my meds down but its probably 50/50

How far along are you? With my dd I think it eased slightly after 20 weeks and I could stomach them most of the time again

Get yourself a nasal spray OP. Just check with the pharmacy first and they will advise you if which one is safe for you to use.
I do feel for you with the hayfever! My first trimester was an absolute bitch, as you can't take any! I literally came out of my scan at 13 weeks and took a hayfever tablet, as I looked like total shit and felt like it too! 😂

@Sb131216 oh thank goodness it's not just me!! I'm 14 weeks. Not struggling with the pregnancy vitamins, it's the little sour hay fever tablets that just get stuck at the back of my throat..

@lockdownpregnancy I've never gotten along with the nasal sprays as my nose is so so sensitive I just sneeze it out immediately..

Oh no @justtb that's a shame!
Maybe the pharmacist can recommend another type of tablet that's coated!
I do hope you sort yourself out! I know how bad it gets with hayfever!

Sb131216 · 05/05/2020 14:44

Oh poor you, never taken those myself but hope you can get some advice from the chemist or gp and find an alternative
Not just you don't worry :)

@lockdownpregnancy my hay fever gets so on top of me I can only compare it to man flu lol

I feel your pain @justtb
My last part of my first trimester when the blossom started and people started cutting their grass I was in hell! Itchy eyes, blocked nose, constant sneezing which did not help my ligament pain that I was having! you have my utmost sympathy!

I don't know if it can be taken in pregnancy but benadryl with acrivastine as the active ingredient comes in capsules rather than pills. It currently isn't available as a generic so is a bit pricey compared to loratidine or cetirizine.
You may have already tried this but taking your drink and then popping the tablet in and swallowing might help - the nasty taste often comes from it every so slightly dissolving the less time it's in your mouth then better.
Have you tried taking it with different fluids? Swap milk for water or vice versa as they have different solubilising properties- which is why drinking milk is better than water if your curry is too hot.

justtb · 06/05/2020 16:04

@Superscientist I think it's the bitter taste of it dissolving at the back of my throat that makes me be sick unfortunately. I will try taking them with something else though! Thank you for the advice

@justtb I've just had a thought but when I was little I couldn't swallow tablets.
My mom used to crush my tablets and then mix them with a little sugar and put the crushed tablets and sugar onto a spoon with the smallest amount of milk and then I took the tablets and drank some extra milk to swill it down.
Maybe try that? 🤷‍♀️

Alychloe · 06/05/2020 17:22

Hi! I am a pharmacist and would recommend trying the cetirizine solution instead which is available to buy over the counter. But due to you being pregnant some pharmacists may not be happy sell it and could refer you to a GP for a prescription. Although the majority of antihistamines are safe to take in pregnancy they should only be taken under supervision of a doctor :) hope this helps!

justtb · 06/05/2020 23:31

@Alychloe oh brilliant. Thank you so much for your help.. I'm going to pharmacy tomorrow so will ask then and possibly book an appointment depending on what they say
