Hi there,

I am coming to 29 weeks now. I was wondering do we find out at any appointments the rough weight the baby may be? Thank you so much!

I think generally if all measurement were ok at the 20 weeks scan you won't get a growth scan unless they suspect the baby is big or small based on fundal measurements.

it can depend on the hospital thou. My first I had a growth scan as standard at the hospital at 36 weeks. Baby measurement big so had another at 39 weeks to make planes for induction

Other pregnancy's only had a growth scan when fundal measurement was measuring 3 weeks ahead otherwise I wasn't offered one

Em you can ask what they are measuring and a projection and birth but it’s really just an educated guess. They don’t usually tell you as standard unless there is a medical concern attached.

In my notes I have a growth chart and it plots approximate weight of baby against the measurement they take at the midwife appointments. My baby is on the 50th centile so continuing like that is tracking to be around 8 and a half pounds

I had a scan a couple of hours before DS was born. I was told 8lbs. He was 10lb 11oz.

Growth scans can be miles out anyway, my twins were estimated to both be over 7lb and were 5lb1 and 5lb9 and DC3 was estimated to be 6lb and was nearly 9..

AndMyHairWillShineLikeTheSea · 04/05/2020 22:40

No, you won't find out. Even if you got a growth scan they can be massively out.

nicciw87 · 04/05/2020 22:43

Imo depends who does the growth scans if u get them I was consultant led so had 1 every 2/3 weeks 2 of the consultants not my normal just had them as normal one was off measured baby really big normal consultant who has 30 years experience told me he was 8lb at 40 weeks had him at 41 weeks weighing 8lb 7oz so he was really accurate

LucaFritz · 04/05/2020 22:47

I had a scan for reduced movement on the Thursday and they said 7lbs 2oz DS was born that Saturday weighing 7lbs 3oz so mine was really accurate i think you only get them if theres concern for baby's safety though you dont normally have scans past 20 week's

JustAddCoffee91 · 04/05/2020 22:48

I don't think they are very accurate anyway to be honest just guesswork
When I was pregnant with my last son they had me worried from 30 weeks because I got told he was going to be really small (under 5lbs) and he was just under 9lbs when he was born and really long, he's just turned 4 months old and he's in 12-18 month clothes... he's honestly massive!
But if it puts your mind at ease I'm sure they will give you a guesstimate xx

BillyAndTheSillies · 04/05/2020 23:31

Have needed growth scans up to 36 weeks with both DS's and they've both been accurate within an oz or two.

None of them matched the fundal measurements. I carry big but have small babies. Which is why I needed growth scans because based on my personal growth charts both of them were hovering around the 10th centile.

Dyra · 05/05/2020 07:33

Unless you have a 36 week scan with your trust, or growth scans, then no sadly. They tell you what the estimated weight for the current gestation is at the scan, then you extrapolate up. Even then, as PPs have mentioned, the scans can be wildly inaccurate.

CurlyEndive · 05/05/2020 07:35

In a normal low risk pregnancy you won't be given a growth scan, they're not very accurate anyway so I wouldn't worry.

cookiemonster5 · 05/05/2020 07:44

Much the same as everyone else I had. Scan the day before my induction. Estimated weight of my first was about 9 and a half pounds. He was 6lb 1oz. Yet to hear of one person who had a remotely accurate scan estimate.

My last baby was measuring small and I had monthly growth scans. He was my biggest out of all 3 at over 7lbs but they were worried he was too small. Don't worry about it as long as baby is growing consistently.
