Symptoms of preeclampsia

I am 33+1 weeks pregnant and have felt extremely exhausted for the last two days but thismorning I woke up and could hardly move, I had a migraine under my left eye and when I tried to eat I projectile vomited all over the bed and floor without warning, I then ran to the bathroom but it happened again and went everywhere (I can usually get my sick in the toilet) I haven't been sick since about 20 weeks. I feel faint, shaky and have blurred vision, I've been laying on the sofa all day so far not able to do anything.

I called my maternity unit thismorning after I had been sick as it was so strange and the lady on the phone said it sounded like a sickness bug so to keep an eye on it but I've never had a sickness bug that feels like this. When I was sick I was seeing stars floating around.

I'm worried about it being preeclampsia and wondering if I need to call maternity triage back again? I did have my BP and urine checked last Wednesday which were both okay, if it was preeclampsia surly it would of shown up then?

Not necessarily, my preE didn't turn up til 38/39 weeks. The midwife barely caught wind of it before I was whisked into hospital to be induced. I didn't have any symptoms other than swollen hands and feet.

At your gestation they'll keep an eye. If it progresses quickly you'll probably have to have a C-section, if not then you'll be scheduled for induction or natural, whatever happens first (and before they get worried)

@TeddyBeans thank you! Sorry you had to deal with preeclampsia, it must of been worrying.

It's so hard to know whether I should just monitor my symptoms at home and see how I feel or to call them back and say how I'm feeling now... I'd feel embarrassed going in and everything being fine after I'd made a big deal out of it!

It's okay, it was so late in my pregnancy that I didn't really think about it. My midwife picked it up at a routine appointment, I had 3 plusses in my urine, sent me off to the hospital for a second opinion and the induction was started that night 😊

Personally I'd give it 24-48 hours by which a sickness bug would probably pass. If you're still feeling under the weather go get checked out. It's always better to be safe

Random63638 · 03/05/2020 15:42

I had severe pre-eclampsia with no symptoms (not to worry you further!). It was only a routine appointment that picked it up. Find a way to get your blood pressure checked, whether that's GP, nurse, EPU or pharmacy?

fretnot · 03/05/2020 16:26

I hope you’re feeling ok now OP. If not, in your shoes I would definitely call them back. The vision/migraine issues are worrying and were mentioned to me specifically by the midwife at my 28 week appointment. What harm can a call do? It deserves to be taken seriously IMO.

chocolate26 · 03/05/2020 16:44

@fretnot still not feeling great, I have a ice pack on my head which is soothing. I feel like at the moment with Coronavirus they are trying to keep people out of maternity units as much as possible which is good but not good when pregnant women might not be getting the care they need. I also worry about going into a hospital at the moment incase I catch it Sad when I look at who's more likely to get preeclampsia I don't match any of the criteria but I know that doesn't mean I won't get it!

@Random63638 I would like to get my blood pressure checked but not sure where I could go at this time on a Sunday? Most places like pharmacy's and gp surgeries are closed!

How is your vision now?

I had very severe late onset preeclampsia and didn't have any of the obvious symptoms. And those that I did have (swelling of feet and legs) were initially dismissed by midwives.

When my symptoms got worse things moved very quickly. I was already in hospital by the time headache and vomiting set in and was put on a magnesium sulphate drip and had an emergency c-section.

Personally I'd call the midwives again.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 03/05/2020 19:10

I would call them back, it's very unlikely you'll speak to the same person as you did before, so just re-explain to them & say you would like to go in to have your BP & urine checked so you can put your mind at ease x

Dyra · 03/05/2020 20:05

I hope you're feeling much better OP.

If you're still not feeling right, please call the midwives again. Especially if you still have the headache. There will have been a shift change by now, so you'll be talking to someone fresh. Hopefully they can arrange for you to have the BP and urine checks tonight or tomorrow.

Albgo · 04/05/2020 06:14

Hope you're okay. x

Thegirlhasnoname · 04/05/2020 06:16

I was clear at a routine midwife appointment and then had tested positive for pre-eclampsia at a growth scan less than 24 hours later, so it can definitely just appear from out of the blue. I’d definitely give them another Ring and hope you’re feeling a bit better

TenThousandSpoons0 · 04/05/2020 06:34

Agree with PP, hope you’re feeling better OPbut I definitely think you need to get things checked out if not. Call them and say persistent headache with visual change, vomiting, worried about pre eclampsia, and don’t let them fob you off.

I’ve only been on these boards for a week or so but I am stunned by how often people are getting fobbed off by maternity units for genuine concerns. Not sure if it’s Covid or if that’s the norm? Either way, the only way to see whether it’s pre eclampsia or a passing bug is a) it’s gone already or b) getting checked. Or c) everybody else in your family has the same!!

the type of headache and vomiting you have doesn’t sound entirely typical for PET so fingers crossed they’re right and it’s just a bug.

Also FYI would avoid going to a pharmacy, various types of preeclampsia you can actually have normal blood pressure, so prob need more of an assessment than just BP. Good luck.

TeddyBeans · 05/05/2020 00:18

How are you doing @chocolate26?

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 05/05/2020 00:27

Hope you're ok OP x

chocolate26 · 05/05/2020 08:55

Thank you everyone for your comments, I'm feeling much better thank you! I went to sleep early on Sunday night and felt better yesterday. Woken up thismorning feeling even better so I'm thinking it was a bad migraine making me sick. If it happens again I will be calling maternity triage to get checked Smile

Glad to hear you're feeling better ❤️ take care and I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes smoothly! Enjoy your little one when they arrive!!

Dyra · 05/05/2020 10:48

Very glad to hear you're feeling better. Definitely get yourself checked if it happens again (everything crossed that it doesn't). Tell your midwife that this happened at your next appointment as well.

Hope the rest of your pregnancy is smooth sailing from here on out.

New2020 · 05/05/2020 19:36
