Has anyone ever suffered from this??
My morning sickness is terrible and there are about three things I can manage to eat without immediate vomiting and then they seem to come up within about half an hour. I have looked at it on a few websites and seem to have quite a few of the symptoms but I hate to self -diagnose especially from online info!!

yes i had it and ended up in hospital on a drip for a week..some people on here stayed in hospital on and off for uch longer.

The trick is to keep your liquid intake up..difficult i know but dehydration causes a drop in blood pressure whixh makes you feel sizzy and even sicker.

I couldn't drink but used to suck ice cubes and ice lollies.

Hope you feel better soon..

susiemj · 17/09/2007 12:10

Yup. I've got it too. Keep up fluids. Cold things are good. Try ices cream aswell as the things Dropdeadfred suggested. You could also try meal replacement drinks like Complan which have protein and vitamins aswell as calories and fluid. And rest!

A word of warning if you go to your doctor. Not all doctors really know a great deal about this and will tell you you have HG but are 'normal'. This caused me a lot of distress as I certainly didn't feel 'normal'. If you need it, you can get treatment in or out of hospital but you might have to be prepared to push for it. As my midwife said to me, being sick 12 times a day is not 'normal'. After that I got some info from www.hyperemesis.org and went to the docotr. Have been off work since and on anti-emetics since. Stress does not help at all. Good luck!

pigsinmud · 17/09/2007 12:25

I had this, but sent home by hospital emergency department. I'd lost 1.5 stones in weight and was being sick 12-15 times a day. Struggled to keep liquids down - only things that sometimes stayed put were sprite and calippos. Not sure of your position, but I got my mum here for a few wekks to look after other 2 children and I went to bed.

Feel for you as was the worst experience of my life!

Lorayn · 17/09/2007 12:34

I dont know for sure that I have it but I am constantly vomiting and when I'm not vomiting I gritting my teeth and my stomach is churning. Thing is I dont think I've lost much weight and I dont even know what my weight was previously, dp says I have but I cant be sure.

Lorayn, I had severe HG through my last pregnancy, I was either in bed or hospital for almost 3 months. I lost two stone and had various other hideous side effects which came with not being able to eat or drink for weeks and weeks.
Hydration as Fred explained is the most important thing, your body can survive for ages without food, but a day without liquids will start to cause problems. Tiptops (those long icepops) were good for me.
You must see your GP before your condition worsens, two doctors dismissed my 'morning sickness' as par for the course, by the time my (very worried) husband called for a third opinion I was seriously dehydrated and was in hospital for 4 days (that was just visit no 1!!)
I tried various antiemetics without any joy before I finally pushed for them to prescribe me Zofran (very expensive anti emetic which isnt widely used in pregnancy in the UK) which did keep my HG under control. If this medication hadnt been effective I would have had to consider terminating the pregnancy as mentally and physically I couldnt cope any more.

I know how awful and depressing it is to feel sick all day and night, please get help, if you feel like your sickness is not the 'norm' then chances are that it's not. Dont worry about self diagnosing - YOU know yourslef better than any doctor!

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 17/09/2007 12:50

how many weeks pg are you?

saralou · 17/09/2007 12:53

you should get yourself checked out, by doctor or midwife (dr's can prescribe the anti-sickness drugs though)

you need to be checked that your not becoming too dehydrated

are you weeing ok??

and how many weeks pg??

Lorayn · 17/09/2007 12:54

I'm 11 weeks gone, I had quite bad sickness with my first two but this feels much worse, al I want to do is sleep or cry, I feel exhausted.

OP posts:
saralou · 17/09/2007 12:57

have you tried those sea band thingies??

sometimes you get into a viscious cycle of throwing up and not being able to eat, which makes you throw up more...

sometimes you need help to get over that with medication

Lorayn · 17/09/2007 12:58

yh I tried those they didnt help me at all, DP says its probably psychological but that doesnt explain why I wake up in the night feeling sick

The hyperemesis website says, very sensibly, don't get too hung up on diagnosis (HG versus severe morning sickness) - the key thing is that if you need help, you need help.
Be assertive with the GP to get drugs if you need to, and get help with dcs/housework/get time off work - you need to rest.

evilreturns · 17/09/2007 13:02

i really feel for you. i was diagnosed with it, but not hospitalised as i wasn't dehydrated (they were going to otherwise). i lived off lemon lucozade and glucose energy tablets from about weeks 7-12 of my pregnancy as everything else came stright back up. the website everyone is recommending is really good - maybe print off a few pages and go back to the drs/midwife? wish i had some really helpful advice but i just ended up muddling through with not much sympathy from anybody (didn't know about mn then!!).

DirtyGertiefromnumber30 · 17/09/2007 13:02

loryan,
Is it getting worse? How long has it been going on for? Defo see a doctor, HG is mental torture and the anti-emetics usually used in pregnancy are very safe these days.
Push for them though - HG is treatable!!!!

saralou · 17/09/2007 13:03

totally agree with Kathy, hyperemesis is just excessive morning sickness at the end of the day

you need to be checked for ketones in your urine too

Lorayn · 17/09/2007 16:41

have spoke to dp about, gonna try and get in to see the doctor sometime this week, just called them but they are closed as of 4pm!!
Think today has been my worst day, cant stop crying and feel so bloody awful, but at least I can hope the doctor can help!!
Until now I thought it was just quite bad morning sickness and would just have to put up with it.

OP posts:
Kathyis6incheshigh · 17/09/2007 16:49

Get an emergency appointment - 'some time this week' might mean you have to wait days, and really you should be seen tomorrow.
Get your dp to ring up first thing tomorrow am, tell them you're pregnant and concerned about dehydration, and don't take no for an answer if they say there are no appointments available.

You do have to push a bit with HG because everyone 'knows' that it is normal to be sick when you're pregnant so it is sometimes very hard to get the message across that you're actually experiencing something beyond normal.

Peachy · 17/09/2007 16:51

Kathyis6incheshigh · 17/09/2007 17:11

Gosh, stress is the last thing you need now! However hopefully it'll ease off soon - if not at 12 weeks, than at 13 or 14! Fingers crossed.
