What do baby's sleep in?

Hi all

Sorry first time mum questions as I am absolutely baffled by all the options on the internet.
Iv got a Chico next to me crib and I was wondering what you use in terms of covers at nighttime? I see there's swaddles, sleep bags etc...

I'm due 1st August so I'm kind of thinking July & weather tends to be fairy warm.
Iv got a blanket for her at hospital and was thinking of swaddling her in that?
Any recommendations muchly appreciated :)

Ds was born in June, in the summer at its hottest he was in a nappy, best or t-shirt with a cellular blanket. Do you have a Groegg or room thermometer? Theres good guidance on the gro website where you put in the temperature and will give advice on what baby should wear.

I would buy: some cellular blankets, a 1.5 tog sleep bag (check the weight advise on it as not usually suitable for newborns). Plus vests and babygros.

In the hospital they will wrap baby up and put a hat on - babys struggle to regulate their temperature in the hours after birth. Once baby is home they dont need a hat on inside.

They say always one layer more than yourself but if you're like me and always feel cold then it's not always the best way to judge it.
My DD2 was born beginning of September so still fairly warm, she wore a babygro and sleep suit with a summer sleeping bag(unsure of the tog think its 1.5?)

I dressed my babies in a sleepsuit and swaddled in a thin blanket when they were still tiny. After about 2 months I put them in a grobag and used the temperature chart on the website to know what to dress them in. I really recommend getting a decent thermometer for the bedroom!

Thank you. I never even thought of a thermometer so I just ordered a groegg.
Our room does tend to get hot during summer as it's south facing but Iv ordered some shutters so hoping I can control the heat a bit when installed.

I think I'm going to go for cellular blankets and swaddle her until she's 1/2 months and go for a grow bag then. Hopefully she likes it 🙈🤞🏻

I just swaddled in a light blanket with my son, he was a September baby.
He loved being swaddled.
Then we moved onto a swaddle grobag, then sleeping bags, now he has like a sleeping bag, but it has legs, so he can walk in it.

Like this, sure you can get them so the arms have poppers on, so you can transition them one arm at a time to being un swaddled.

You will learn what baby prefers and how warm they want to be, I found all the charts online far too warm for our daughter. Like take about 2 layers off what they suggested too warm! You will know when your baby needs a layer less or a layer more honestly (as bizarre as it sounds now)

kittykat7210 · 02/05/2020 21:45

Oh yeh also our daughter HATED swaddling and wanted to be free as soon as she was born (I guess she’d had enough inside my cramped tummy! So just go with the flow! This was our daughter at only a week or so old, no way to swaddle this young lady!!

At first, I just put her in a vest and sleepsuit, but within a few weeks I put her in a newborn sleeping bag at night. I still used a blanket in the day for naps though.

I had the Chico and it’s marvellous. Good choice.

We had an August baby in a chicco next to me crib! Never bothered with swaddling, just a cellular blanket and we made sure it was tucked in securely.

The vest / sleep suit / blanket situation depended on the temperature.

Good luck! You'll probably be completely shocked by the amount of time your baby will want to sleep on you (rather than conveniently in a crib or Moses basket!) but hang in there and it gets easier.
