I was in hospital yesterday as i have hyperemesis so was getting fluids etc. they took some blood and when i got home last night they called to say my thyroid function was low, and they want me to repeat the blood test in a week. Should I be worried? Does anyone have any experience with this? xx

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 28 weeks, though, thinking back, it probably started around 20 weeks.
The consultant said it may return to normal after birth, I had my dd 12 weeks ago, still on 75mg thyroxine as my levels didn’t return to normal so I’m on a yearly return to the GP for thyroid checks.

oh thats interesting. Is it bad for the baby? I'm trying to stay off google as my anxiety is already through the roof. xx

I also had a very anxious pregnancy due to previous miscarriage.
I felt unnaturally tired during my 2nd trimester, had bloods done for high heart rate and my thyroid function was off. I believe it’s reasonably common in pregnancy due to hormone changes.
Having hypothyroidism doesn’t effect your pregnancy in anyway as far as I know, or was told. And I certainly felt much better for being started on thyroxine.

I'm afraid I have to contradict the other post about hypothyroidism not causing problems. While treatment is easy and I don't think you should be overly worried as they've caught it now. It can cause problems for both mother and baby, it's important to get it treated. From blood pressure issues, developmental issues with baby, premature birth etc, it's not something to ignore. You'll be fine, just make sure to follow up with your test

I should correct the above to say well managed hypothyroidism.
Obviously it needs treated and I wasn’t implying at all that it shouldn’t be.

I had graves disease so hyperthyroidism then had radioactive therapy and been hypothyroid for the 8 years since so see a consultant and get regular blood tests through pregnancies

Levels can fluctuate when pregnant with increased blood etc. If it is minor and you are on Thyroxine then I would leave it with them but make sure you get levels checked and any issues you'll be spoken to about and show in a scan.

Im on 200 at 7 weeks, I was on 150 at the end of my last pregnancy.
I'm on other meds which raised issues with my dd but thyroid wise when she was born she has slightly abnormal thyroid results at birth and told to go back the next week to the hospital for another check which ended up ok

Be pleased they know, ask any questions and if you feel unwell contact your midwife or gp for a blood test to check. It's not uncommon for the dose to need increasing with the pregnancy
