Best newborn sleep options

Hi

First timer here looking for some advice. My friend on Skype casually mentioned that a snuzpod side crib and sleepyhead for daytime naps were her essentials when she had her newborn.

They’re expensive purchases so wondered what people thought? I’ve been given a bassinet I was planning to use and my dad bought us a crib for when he’s 4-6 months and we would move him to his own room

Any thoughts?? I have no idea what’s best and what’s just a gimmick
Thanks

The tricky thing is that everyone's baby is different.

We had a reasonably good sleeper - and we found a traditional Moses basket (that we took around the house with us) during the day and a Chicco Next To Me cosleeper at night worked really well.

Following as I am interested in answers too.
Also planning on having baby in our room for first few months, but unsure what to use during the day? We are in a flat so it's only the next room but I dont want to have to move the bedside cot every morning and evening?

Baby should be in your room for the first 6 months ideally. I use a Moses basket in the living room and another one in my room. There's a cot in their room for when they're the right age. Currently they will sleep in their basket in the bedroom but don't seem to like the living room one. Every baby is different. My midwife said not to use the sleepyhead type things cuz baby can overheat apparently 🤨

We had a Chico next to me crib in our bedroom for DS which he was in for 12 weeks before he outgrew it (big lad). We loved it - loved having the baby so close at night and not a faff to do night feeds.

We did initially use a Sleepyhead in the crib but DS wasn't overly keen on it and liked spreading his arms out when he slept. We didn't buy a new one (couldn't justify the price) but picked up one on eBay for £40. Like the pp said, every child is different and will have their own likes/dislikes. Maybe worth looking at second hand options to see if your little one likes something in particular before investing.

We had a borrowed moses basket for downstairs but again he outgrew it pretty quickly. Didn't actually use it as much as I thought I would actually. If you have a travel system you could use the carrycot part which friends of mine did.

My children slept in a cot in their own rooms at night but during the day I had a travel cot downstairs. It was also handy when they were getting mobile to pop them in if I needed to go out of the room for a few minutes, and of course it was taken with is when we travelled and they were well used to it.

I don’t think you’ll be putting baby in his own room at 4 months tbh. DD was in the tutti bambini bedside crib until 9 months and then moved to a big cot in her own room. I really rate the bedside cribs they’re so handy as when baby wakes up in the night they’re right next to you and you don’t even need to sit up to just roll them in (if you’re breast feeding).
For naps during the day I would just put her in the bedroom in the crib or in her bouncer/sofa/blanket on play mat in the front room.

I have a 4 month old. We had a Moses basket for the first 3 months and then moved him into a cot to bed. He's slept through the night (6-5.30) since about two months. I don't think sleepyheads are essential at all and have friends who swear by them, saying that it helps the baby "differentiate from day and night sleep".

I had the baby in the Moses basket in our room at night, and the same Moses basket in whatever room I was in for his naps in the day. It hasnt effected his night time sleep at all! But like you say, every baby is different.

My rule was to buy the bare minimum and then if I needed something further down the line, order it. Most places do next day delivery!

We had a Snuz pod and couldn't fault it...our little boy was in our room in it till 7 months...the lastest version has something u can place underneath to give it an incline to help babies with reflux...we used it all the while even thou our little boy didn't really suffer from it...I also wanted to get a sleepy head but I no some people arnt keen on products in cots due to SIDS...we had a Moses basket for down stairs...another fab purchase we got was a shnuggle bath xxx

pinksquash13 · 02/05/2020 06:35

We didnt buy a moses basket as I knew baby would outgrow it quickly. We used the pram carry cot for downstairs sleeping (I bought a rocking stand to put it on from amazon). Then we had a next to me crib which is great as lots of room to grow into so will last until she moves into her own room. Didnt buy sleepyhead mainly due to cost and we haven't felt the need for it.

4 months is the peak age for suddenly infant death syndrome (cot death) so definitely shouldn’t be putting baby in it’s own room. Baby should be in with you for a minimum of 6 months, but ideally 12 months. That includes all naps also.
Any sleep aids should only be used under supervision, so baby should never be left in them.

Colouringinbook · 02/05/2020 08:24

We used Moses Basket downstairs until he outgrew it and a next 2 me upstairs until he went into his own room. He had lots of his daytime naps out and about in his buggy so would often finish his nap in the hall.

happymummy12345 · 02/05/2020 11:34

We had a normal swinging crib to start, then a cot. Both in our room. We knew we wanted to keep dc in our room as long as possible. We had room for the cot anyway, and if we didn't we'd have moved furniture out so the cot would fit in.
Personally I never saw the point or need for a baby to sleep downstairs during the day, so we never did it. He always slept upstairs. So never needed anything for sleeping downstairs. Plus I hate Moses baskets and would never ever put my baby in one.
