Hello I’m 33 weeks and last week seemingly randomly developed a rash all over my stomach and thighs and chest- it is itchy and a bit sore and very annoying and distressing to look at every day as well. Especially when I have no clue what it is or what caused it...I normally have clear skin on those areas and now they are covered! I’ve tried several creams I had around the house but doesn’t seem to be doing anything at all.

What would you do?

I'd phone the hospital for some advice

I’d phone gp/midwife and get some advice.
Me hen I was pregnant with both my dc at around the 35 week mark I got very itchy skin. No rash though. Midwife said it was possibly just skin stretching.

But with a rash I’d absolutely get it checked out. Just in case.

Obviously it’s the weekend now and access to dr might be difficult. Have you tried putting porridge oats in a pair of tights (in the foot then tying it in a ball) and then having an oat bath. This helps soothe chickenpox. So might help?

Check with Dr. I broke out in a similar rash I my first trimester, as i wasn't sure if it was chicken pox as it was pretty angry looking at first and all over upper half of body. Its now much calmer tho it does look like flat dry spots on my thighs still (chest tummy and arms look loads better)They said some womens hormones can cause different kinds of breakouts and are harmless. They gave me an eczema cream for it as for me they dried out before fading. Im 19 weeks now.
Certainly no harm in checking with Dr if all is ok or if u need a cream, especially as u r further along than I am.

Could be this maybe?

I would call the midwife team (usually you can leave a message and they'll get back to you within 24h or so)

What happens when you press the rash with a glass?

MrsJKK · 02/05/2020 06:16

I got a similar rash last week (wk 34) which was diagnosed by the GP as polymorphic eruption of pregnancy (PEP). Apparently this is common in third trimester and tends to go after birth. It’s important though you seek medical advice to rule out any other serious causes of rash.
My rash was over my stomach, chest, arms and thighs. Very itchy and sore! I used calamine lotion and aloe vera for relief and a week later it is still there but not nearly as obvious or itchy!

Thanks for the replies, it could be PUPPP I guess and if so it doesn’t look like I can really do very much. I will phone the triage ward on Monday and see what they recommend that I do, I’m guessing they would say just monitor it to see if it gets worse/doesn’t improve in a couple of weeks but we shall see

@Halloweenbabyy it doesn’t fade completely, it does quite a bit, but due to me having it several days and it being itchy, and not having a fever/headache I don’t think it’s anything along the sepsis/meningitis lines thankfully

Thanks for the tips, I will hopefully get a diagnosis from the GP or hospital next week and if so will get ordering some calamine and aloe Vera! I was trying sudocreme and aqueous cream and tea tree oil and they didn’t do anything much really!

I do not wish to sound over the top, but you really should call the triage ward now and not wait until Monday.

While it may be harmless, it also might be a sign of an infection which could pass to your baby if not treated quickly, and result in meningitis.

Unfortunately my baby had bacterial meningitis at birth, and while I do not know how as I don't remember feeling under the weather I wish it knew.

Just as a precaution please call them today. You don't want to look back if something were to happen and regret waiting.

Catlover10 · 02/05/2020 11:36

@Alarae oh gosh how awful for you! I’m so sorry to hear that. I thought I was doing the right think waiting until Monday when they have more staff but maybe I should ring up today anyway just to see what they say. Is it the MAFA (maternal and Fetal assessment unit) that I should ring? I have a few other numbers, for labour ward and antenatal clinic and birthing unit but I guess that one is the most appropriate?

NameChange30 · 02/05/2020 11:43

Personally I'd call the midwife team (as I already said) or the antenatal clinic but don't know if they'd pick up messages on a Saturday. I guess you could try MAFA and if it's not them, they'll tell you who to call.

Catlover10 · 02/05/2020 11:53

@namechange30 ok thank you I will try them both and see who I can get through to. Feel like I always decide there is something wrong with me on a weekend!!!🤦🏻‍♀️

Just an update, the midwife team didn’t pick up so I just rang the assessment unit and asked to be directed to whoever was best to talk to in my situation, and they told me to come in today for some blood tests (I don’t know which ones though) in a couple of hours time. Hopefully they come back clear and it’s just “one of those things” but I guess it’s best to have the tests done just incase.
