Hi Everyone,
Looking to see if any others have experienced this or if in the same boat??. I'm just gone 31 weeks, went for a growth scan today and was told my placenta is lying low, the Consultant said if it stays in the same position I may have to go into hospital early as in the next weeks and stay there in case I bleed, she booked me in again for May 11th so she can check again if there is any change, she told me not to worry but I can't help in doing so.

I've had low lying placenta in all my pregnancies apart from this one, luckily enough though they have all moved with scans checked around 37 weeks, mine would have been c section if they didn't move though, good luck hopefully it will still move for u

StuntNun · 27/04/2020 19:24

Quite often they move up as your uterus gets bigger. I had placenta previa with my DS4 which didn't move and I ended up having a section. I know it sucks and it's a bit scary but you're much better off knowing what's happening. My mum was a midwife in the 70s and they wouldn't have even known there was a problem until the woman came in to hospital bleeding. At least if the placenta doesn't move you'll be able to go on pelvic rest to keep you and baby safe.

I'm 26 weeks and currently have placenta previa, I'm hoping to god that it moves but i have a follow up scan at 34 weeks. I've been told that the pregnancy will continue as normal, no extra monitoring apart from this scan & the minute I start to bleed to go to the hospital, I wouldn't of thought they'd keep you in on a maybe unless they were planning a delivery via section or you had a history of bleeding.. especially with what's happening now

btbtbt · 27/04/2020 23:24

I'm 35 weeks and still got low lying placenta, got my final scan next week to check if it's moved. If it has not, they will book me in for a c section at 38 weeks, they like to avoid the pregnancy going too far to avoid you going into natural labour. I've been advised I'd only have to stay in hospital to be monitored if I had the bleeding, they won't keep you in unless this happens. Try not to worry, they are good at keeping you informed and prepared x

Ladies thanks so much for your replies, haven't experienced any bleeding, hopefully by the time I go back for my next scan the placenta will have moved up!

It also depends which type of low lying placenta you've got, it may not be completely covering your cervix which means if it doesn't move you may not have to have a C-section. (Depends what the sonographer said ofcourse)

I've got a low lying placenta, I'm 34 weeks never bled since having it either. It was picked up at my 20 week scan and still hasn't moved, but I'm booked in for an ELCS anyway. I'm having growth scans for different reasons but at my last growth scan they said they don't assess it until 35/36 weeks or make decisions about labour till then. (may just be my trust)

It's funny how different consultants do things differently. I still had complete placenta praevia at 31 weeks (last week), and all I was told was to come back for another scan at 36 weeks to discuss the next steps. Your next scan is significantly before mine! I only know that I would be admitted in the event of bleeding from Google (and well, the RCOG guidance).

@btbtbt That's really good to know. I'd like to go to 38 weeks (at least) if I can but I've read they can say to have it at 37.

RenegadeMrs · 28/04/2020 21:02

I had complete plaventa pervia with DD.

Diagnosed at 32 weeks, straight to the consultant after the scan and given steroids. I was unlucky and had a bleed the very next day so back to hospital in the middle of the night. Very scary but luckily it stopped on its own accord.

Because I had had a bleed they wanted to keep me in hospital after that, but as I lived less than a mile away they let me go home, bit I was signed off work at that point.

DD was delivered at 36+1 after a second bleed. Again it had stopped on its own, but it was decided it would be better to deliver with no bleed in a controlled section early than a emergency second with uncontrolled bleeding. The section was very calm, DD was delivered without any issues and didn't need any help and just went with me to the recovery ward, so a good outcome after all the stress of the weeks before.

It is a scary scenario, but you can have placenta previa and it move up, or not bleed at all! I think they like it to be a few centimeters away from the cervix to allow you to attempt a natural birth.

I won't say not to worry because that is impossible advice, but know you will be looked after well.

Practical advice: Pack a hospital bag now, just in case, although hopefully you won't need it and plan how to get to hospital ASAP if you do have a bleed. Have some pads to hand as well. If you do bleed they'll want a look at how much blood you've lost.

Hopefully you'll need none of the above though and it'll shift. Do you knownof you have an anterior placenta? Apparently they are likely to move more.

Missy38 · 28/04/2020 22:13

Hi just to jump in I have anterior placenta and I thought that was in the front of belly? And would stay where it is?

RenegadeMrs · 29/04/2020 08:23

From what I understand (and this is what was told to me, I'm not a doctor!) it won't move from being anterior and will always be attached where it is now, but as your baby grows and belly expands this can pull the placenta up out of the way of the cervix.

A bit like your belly button, it hasn't changed place on your body, but it gets further away from your spine as your pregnancy progresses.

Missy38 · 29/04/2020 09:50

Ah ok, thanks

Clairyd121 · 29/04/2020 15:19

I think from what I can remember the Consultant said my placenta is anterior as well, she said the baby is fine which is the most important thing and they can monitor the placenta.
