Chicco Crib - Seems cheap?!

Hi all,

I've been offered a crib-bed by a friend which can be used from birth - I know it comes from a great house and is in good condition but it is also an awkward size, and I've started to wonder whether buying new mattresses is worth it! Plus, whether we're actually going to be able to pick it up before baby is due...

Anyway, this started me off looking at cribs and I found this Chicco one on the Argos website. I'd ruled these out as being too expensive for the short time they would last baby, but this one seems particularly reasonable - am I missing something?

Also, if anyone has had one of these, is the 'removable mattress cover' the same as a protector, or would I need one of those too?

Thanks Grin

There on offer on online4baby I think x

LexiM · 27/04/2020 16:44

That does seem quite good value. I know what you mean about second hand I keep wondering if it’s worth it once you’ve paid for the new mattress too.

There’s quite a few Chicco next to me styles, I can’t really work out the differences between them all!

strawberry2017 · 27/04/2020 16:45

My baby girl stayed in here's till she was 7 months old- because they are a decent size they let a lot longer then Moses baskets.
Possible it's an older style they are selling off? They do have offers on them every now and again x

strawberry2017 · 27/04/2020 16:46

Oh forgot- I got my next to me of eBay for £50 and got a £10 mattress off amazon.
My sister then used it and got a new mattress from amazon and we are due to use it again In the coming weeks and literally paid £10 for a new mattress again. Amazon have loads of options that work out good value. X

I have one and was best thing I ever bought. Just get a few flat waterproof sheets.

Chichz · 27/04/2020 17:50

Thanks for the tips everyone. I guess it's just an older model then... seems fine to me!

I've been thinking the same also, Emma's Diary and Bounty often have offers for these aswell and you can get 5 piece bundles with feeding pillows, spare sheets etc. For a little more so worth looking.

There are other cheaper brands available too which start at around £79, uno and babylo plus more :)

Next to me style cribs are really handy I think especially if you're breastfeeding as I used to worry I'd fall asleep with my son, once I bought a bedside crib I slept far better and got great peace of mind. So I'd really recommend them personally.

Chichz · 27/04/2020 21:41

Thank you @XmasRibbons.

I think I've convinced myself to get one - now just to convince the DH! Grin

I bought a kinder kraft from lydl for £79 they're brilliant

ThisShitAgain · 27/04/2020 23:00

I had the exact same one and it lasted until DC was 6 months and DC was big (over 11lb born).

This and the perfect prep were my best buys.

The removable cover is a protector but I still had waterproof sheets as spares - great when you have a middle of the night ‘poomergency’ Wink

Chichz · 28/04/2020 09:03

Ah yes, the poonami! Grin

Thanks for all the advice. Not the best time to be a clueless, FTM (even if I am 32!) x

We paid less than that for our "latest model" Chicco (at the time) from John Lewis. It was £104. If you price watch and then buy in the sales you will save about half if not more. From my research 18 months ago that seems a reasonable price, I would have been tempted. Our baby stayed in it until he was 6 months, he probs could have been in it longer (he's v light) but we wanted him out of our room, hehe. We bought 2x 2 packs of sheets and a mattress protector but in hindsight we probs should just have bought one pack of sheets as they're quite expensive even though I got them "cheap" on eBay. Our baby wasn't really ever sick/pooey. He's now 14 months and I can only think of a handful of times that we've had to change them due to soiling, so I'd wait to see what your baby is like!

We were planning to buy it second hand and get a new mattress but when I saw the discounted price it made sense to buy it new. We didn't buy anything at all full price (if we bought it new) as there's no need.

Chichz · 28/04/2020 12:26

Thanks @Cardboard33 - little tips about sheets and things are so useful!

I was feeling pretty relaxed until the last couple of weeks or so, when it occurred to me we many not be able to get hold of things quite so easily.

Oh in answer to your question about the mattress protector, again, we bought a separate one (little green sheep) but due to the lack of poos we probs could have done without. However I'm not sure if £20 is worth risking if you do get dealt a pooey baby and it's the middle of the night!!

www.thelittlegreensheep.co.uk/organic-mattress-protector-large-crib-83x50cm/ - this is out one. I got ridiculously stressed about sheets as the cm dimensions of my Chicco were a little bigger than even the official sheets, but I can confirm that they do actually fit with room to spare!

BertieBotts · 29/04/2020 10:46

I think it's expensive for something that only lasts about 6 months, but the reduction will be because it's an old colour line.

I had ikea Cots for mine and converted them to cosleeping ones. Really easy to do, cheaper than the next to me, and you don't have to buy another cot later.

Cardboard33 · 29/04/2020 18:20

We had the next to me and then he went straight into a cot bed in his own room, so hopefully we won't be buying him another bed until he's 4 or so. We paid less than £200 for them both in the JL sales, so I'd like to think that £50 per year of my child's life is an ok price. Unless you don't have space for a cot bed (eg you're in a one bed flat) I don't know why anyone would buy a cot tbh but each to their own as we all do things differently.

Popcat120 · 29/04/2020 18:30

I brought a kinder kraft one.
It's similar to chicco but much cheaper!
I'll be using it for second baby.

Chichz · 29/04/2020 21:21

Brilliant ideas, thanks ladies.

I've also seen Kinderkraft @Popcat120 - DH will probably go for that due to German-sounding name Grin. He is definitely up for getting one, though we are going to leave it a couple more months - gives me chance to keep an eye on the sales, as has been suggested!

@Cardboard33 They look lovely - 2 fo £30 isn't soooo bad, and probably worth the risk! Haha.
