I had a wasp sting when about 16 wks pg and some random insect bite when I was 5 wks. Both swelled up LOADS - way more than if I wasn't pg. Maybe the body goes into some weird overdrive to protect you and the foetus? Not sure. Anyway, the wasp sting was v itchy, but v cold cloth on it helped, took a few days to go away. Had to have antibiotics for other insect bite as my whole leg swelled up but was assured no harm to baby.

reckon you might have a point about re body protection overdrive, stung before but it never swelled like this. never hurt like this either!

The wasp that did it was nearly dead too, was crawling aorund on the floor. Virtually it's last act was to sting me - bloody typical! Definitey hurt and swelled up more than usual

In this pregnancy I've had big itchy lasting-a-week swellings come up from an earwig nip and a woodlouse bite (did you know woodlice could bite? I didn't until I flicked it off my finger!). I think I believe in this over-drive effect.

Got any vinegar in the cupboard? If so soak a cloth/tissue in it and apply to the sting -- should neutralise it in no time

tyaca · 16/09/2007 10:54

only balsamic - but will give it a go

Anything acidic should do the trick, lemon juice etc...

tyaca · 17/09/2007 02:22

oh ow ow ow

curse that wasp.

after posting, all seemed ok-ish for a few hours. just woke up to find out exactly what you mean Annain about the itching.

cannot believe it's coming up to half two in morning and i'm on internet posting to strangers 'bout the fact i'm lying on sofa with a tea towel soaked in balsamic vinegar wrapped round foot.

Yep, I can't believe how much it itched.

I scratched it so much I still have a little mark where the sting was and it was 17 weeks ago!

Hope the vinegar is helping. A wet cloth, really cold, helped too (i put it in the freezer for a few minutes to make it v cold)

AnnainNZ · 17/09/2007 07:17

And normally antihistamine cream would stop the itching but I'm pretty sure you're not allowed it while pg

tyaca · 17/09/2007 18:41

lol - i've had a proper allergic reaction!

foot started swelling from when i woke this morning and only just started to slow down a couple of hours ago. i have a proper comedy foot. and - thankfully - antihistamines that can be taken while pregnant,

and permish to lie on arse for a week to prevent infection ;-)

Ooh, a week on the sofa on medical advice, that's a shame...

Could be time to catch up on that DVD watching!
