Coffee/Nespresso Capsules during pregnancy

Hello ladies, just recently discovered I had a BFP. Still early days, but I was wondering if any of you are drinking coffee/nespresso capsules while pregnant? Information online seems mixed. I have always had coffee every day, but recently only cut to one each morning (a strong one strength 8 or 9/10 from nespresso). I have never tried cutting coffee completely. What has your experience been with cutting coffee whilst pregnant and would you say that’s necessary? xx

Pretty clear here www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/pregnancy/should-i-limit-caffeine-during-pregnancy/

I’ve personally stopped all caffeine. I don’t even want it anymore.

PatricksRum · 27/04/2020 08:14

Agree with pp. The guidelines are very clear as to how much caffeine per day is recommended

Mucklowe · 27/04/2020 08:20

I limit myself to one small cup of caffeinated tea in the morning, then decaf in the afternoon. Completely cut out coffee. I hate the idea of my baby getting a caffeine buzz Confused

Diorissimo1985 · 27/04/2020 08:22

There are decaf capsules for nespresso machines - the taste is similar if not quite the same

4amWitchingHour · 27/04/2020 08:24

I cut my coffee down to one caffeinated a day, and then I went off it completely. I can stomach it now again (at 28 weeks), but I'm only drinking decaf unless I'm really shattered in the morning. Same with tea, went off both for quite a while

Lavenderpurple · 27/04/2020 08:24

I don’t drink tea or coffee but obviously other things contain caffeine. I followed the nhs guidelines when I was expecting dd and no problems. I am doing the same with this one.

EithneBlue · 27/04/2020 08:28

I haven't had an aversion to my morning coffee so I'm still drinking it :-) So long as you're below the 200mg/day recommended you're fine. Some people go off it, apparently: what torture for them ;-)

excitednerves · 27/04/2020 08:52

I went decaf in my first pregnancy and when breastfeeding, I’ve never gone back, except accidentally when I’ve forgotten to say decaf in a cafe.

sel2223 · 27/04/2020 08:59

You can have 200mg of caffeine per day.

I have 1 cup of instant coffee each morning and limit chocolate, avoid pop etc.

sunshinefordays · 27/04/2020 09:02

@bluemonday2020 I stopped completely until I was about 16 weeks (when lockdown started!) I've now started drinking one cup of coffee a day, which is within the recommended guidelines. Strangely it helps me feel less sick, though I know it is the opposite for most women!

bee222 · 27/04/2020 09:02

I have one caffeinated drink a day. Remember that things like chocolate and fizzy drinks also contain caffeine, so if you are having one a day you should make sure any little extras are not taking you over your limit.

tabbycat985 · 27/04/2020 09:15

Hey OP I've cut down loads but am still drinking one strong nespresso capsule every morning (it's within guidelines) & I don't think I'm going to change to decaf because if I had decaf in the house I'd probably drink several coffees a dayBlush
I don't drink soda & am completely off chocolate etc so I'm not getting any extra caffeine other than my morning coffee.

Congratulations on your bfp💕

Thank you so much for all your quick responses!!! xxx

I used to have two cups of normal tea each day. One Nespresso should be fine.

Sunshine1235 · 27/04/2020 09:26

I went off coffee and tea for my first trimester anyway, now midway through my second and I’m having a cup of coffee in the morning and that’s all

MichelleOR84 · 27/04/2020 09:26

I drink coffee! I did throughout my entire first pregnancy and I am during my current pregnancy. I drink Nespresso capsules .

On the Nespresso website they say :

“What is the caffeine content in the coffee?
The amount of caffeine in a capsule depends on the varieties of green coffee used in the recipe. The Robusta origin contains an average of 2.4% whereas the Arabica origins contain approximately 1.3% of caffeine. Decaffeinated capsules contain less than 0.1% of caffeine. The classic Nespresso capsules contain approx 5g of ground coffee whereas the Lungo capsules contain approx 6g of ground coffee.

Example: a pure Arabica coffee in a classic Nespresso capsule (5g) containing 5g x 1.3% = 0.065g= 65 milligrams (mg) of caffeine.
Below are examples or average caffeine contents according to the type of coffee preparation (values are based on UK Food Standards Agency):
Cup of filter coffee: 75mg
Mug of instant coffee: 100 mg
Tea cup: 50mg
Standard cola drink: up to 40mg
Standard energy drink: 80 mg
Dark chocolate bar: up to 50mg“

They recommend to keep your caffeine amount under 200mg of caffeine a day in the UK .

I drink one Nespresso capsule a day and occasionally a tea in the afternoon . With both of these that’s about 105mg so I was well within my limit . Remember also that things like coke and chocolate have caffeine too.

If you can give up coffee then great but personally I love it and it keeps me regular 😝 ! I use to drink a few strong coffees a day pre pregnancy so I did deal with caffeine withdrawal headaches for a couple weeks until my body adjusted !

Amichelle84 · 27/04/2020 09:43

I have about 2 nespresso coffees a week, and usually a few cups of tea a day.

mable88 · 27/04/2020 10:01

I initially went off coffee completely, which solved the problem for me! After 12 weeks I started fancying it again, so I have one ‘normal’ Nespresso first thing and then any further coffees I have are decaf pods. Don’t drink tea and have a bit of chocolate each day so with one full whack coffee and a bit of chocolate I figure I am well under the recommended 200mg per day Smile

Natalie654321 · 27/04/2020 10:08

I have one cup of coffee a day and a currently 12 weeks pregnant

TheVanguardSix · 27/04/2020 10:13

I'm not pregnant, OP. Those days are long past for me. But Nespresso does wonderful decaf capsules. I had a heart attack last month and although I'm allowed caffeine, I'm a bit nervous. So I've ordered the Nespresso decaf pods and you wouldn't know the difference. It's lovely!

But to be honest, in all of my pregnancies, I went off tea and coffee in the first trimester but returned to it later on in the pregnancy. So I did have one caffeinated coffee or two teas a day and no harm was done.

Franticbutterfly · 27/04/2020 13:18

I stopped drinking caffeine when I discovered that I was pg with DD3, as DD1 and DD2 didn't sleep well and it took me that long to realise that my tea habit affected their sleeping patterns via breastfeeding. It's essentially a stimulant drug.

I've never gone back to caffeine as It really affects me now. I drink the nespresso pods with a red dot.

Loladisco · 27/04/2020 13:29

5 weeks here. I am slowly phasing out caffeine, I only drink instant coffee so cut from my regular 2 cups to 1 and now I have a 50/50 mix of caff and decaff in my morning cuppa and decaff if I have another. I have found just cutting it out straight away gave me horrendous headaches so hopefully phasing it out will be a bit gentler. My DH had bought a huge box of Pepsi Max (my favourite) which I am trying not to touch.

zscaler · 27/04/2020 14:27

I was drinking once cup a day earlier in pregnancy (and no other caffeine) but I now find (at week 6+5) I have completely gone off it and can’t even stand the smell. So your body may make the decision for you!

Mc3209 · 27/04/2020 14:33

I couldn't live without coffee before I got pregnant.

I chose to completely cut out caffeine this pregnancy, but I still drink decaf (I found lavazza decaf beans, so actually it tastes ok when you put it through the coffee machine!). I think you can get decaf pods as well.
