Hi everyone wondering if anyone can help me choose what hospital to attend please. I live quite close to both hospitals so that isn’t an issue. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Hi,

I have chosen the RVI purely because I've heard great things from friends who have given birth there. I've been very happy with the service I've received from them so far, I have 7 weeks to go now. My sister-in-law gave birth to both her little ones at the QE and didn't have a bad word to say about it x

Hodge85 · 26/04/2020 22:13

Sorry, I've not been much help there when I've read my reply back x

Newmummyxx · 26/04/2020 22:21

You have been a good help, thanks for a quick reply. That’s great you have had a good experience so far. My sister in law recently gave birth at the Rvi and they were great with her and also a friend at the qe. Before the pregnancy I had a consultant (that’s now retired) at the Rvi so it could possibly make sense to choose there. I’m only 10 weeks and quite an anxious person so that’s why I was looking into a smaller hospital with needing to attend appointments alone. Hope your 7 weeks go quick for you.Smile

I had a few of my dc at rvi as I needed a consultant who specialised in Rhesus. I actually followed him from the place I previously had my dc!! I used the mlu when it first opened. Nothing but praise op.

CoffeeTeaCoffee · 26/04/2020 22:24

RVI hands down. They are one of the best in the country. The midwife led unit is amazing as are the staff. Plus they have all the facilities to care for you if anything were to go wrong. In the NE I wouldn't choose to go elsewhere.

HenTeeth · 26/04/2020 22:25

Surely it’s better to be born North of the Tyne! (Only half joking).

Congratulations. 💐

Newmummyxx · 26/04/2020 22:26

Bet that was reassuring to know you would be seeing the same consultant. Great to hear some more positive news. It’s my first baby so it’s all new to me.

@CoffeeTeaCoffee Thank you Rvi seems like a very popular choice.

@HenTeeth Ha that made me laugh, to be fair they are the most north out of my 3 options. Thank you.

Myself and friends have all recently opted for the QE. They were tremendous for my child's birth. Sounds really stupid but I felt like a bit of a VIP when I was there Blush planned C section but was the only one on the list so straight in, only person on ward the first day, private room as we ended up in for a longer stay. I couldn't speak more highly of the staff there, they were just superb. Will be selecting there for any (fingers crossed) future births. Oh, and parking and traffic was way easier to manage at QE. I'm not a fan of town traffic.

Wrongdissection · 26/04/2020 22:45

RVI every time.

sel2223 · 26/04/2020 23:10

RVI hands down. They're one of the best hospitals in the country.

kidsareok · 26/04/2020 23:27

Hi! I am in a similar dilemma but I don't know whether to choose RVI or Cramlington NSECH?! If anyone has any advice please let me know!

So far I'm going RVI because if anything goes wrong they have the best consultants and medical equipment available immediately. My cousins gave birth there a few years ago, her baby needed ICU treatment and he was there within minutes - I wonder if Cramlington/QE hospitals would have such facilities?! The only thing that makes me think Cramlington could be good is that I had a MMC last year and I went there - the staff were absolutely fantastic, the hospital seemed bright and cheery and it was easily accessible.

Have you visited both OP? What vibes do you get?
Smile

riotlady · 26/04/2020 23:35

@kidsareok I had my DD by c section at NSECH and they were lovely there. They do have a SCBU for baby if they need it.

What I liked was that it’s all private rooms, not wards, and your partner can stay over with you.

kidsareok · 26/04/2020 23:42

@riotlady ahh it sounds lovely! I did get really good vibes when I was there and it has totally made me feel torn between the two. I didn't know there were private rooms and my OH could stay which is also a total bonus - I have some deciding to do I think!

Newmummyxx · 27/04/2020 07:22

@Springb0ks That sounds like such a lovely experience with the qe. I think it’s so hard because I haven’t actually heard anything bad about either of them. I did think about parking too. Thanks for replying.

@kidsareok It’s so hard to choose isn’t it. It sounds like you might have two good places to pick from too. I haven’t had the chance to visit any hospitals due to the Coronavirus. My sister in law gave birth to my nephew last year in the RVI and my brother was allowed to stay over with her too. Have your appointments at the RVI been okay so far? I’ve always been happy with appointments there in the past but never attended at the maternity department. I hope that partners can stay over again by the time we have our babies.

I had both my dc at the RVI and my youngest is 9 so it’s been a while but I honestly don’t think my dd would be here if it wasn’t for their quick reactions. I had a water birth there with my ds and it was amazing, I even remember laughing through most of it. The midwife was so calm and in control I felt in good hands the whole time. My dd birth was complete opposite, emergency csection. I was knocked out and dh wasn’t allowed in the room as they had to get her out so quick. They saved her life I’m 100% on that and I’ll forever be grateful. So long story but yes RVI are amazing Star

LatteLover12 · 27/04/2020 07:49

The RVI is fantastic and, if it was ever needed, a centre for fetal medicine.

I'm planning to have my third baby there in a few months time and I wouldn't go anywhere else. The staff are amazing.

littleduckeggblue · 27/04/2020 07:59

RVI

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 27/04/2020 08:07

Had both of mine at QE and cannot fault them. Own room with dc1, and I was alone in a 3berth bay for second dc. Had no issues throughout and felt very safe and well looked after.

What swung it for me was the hideous treatment I received from RVI when I presented with signs of pneumonia. I was treated so awfully by triage and the wait times were disgustingly high. It was only once my xrays (eventually) came back that they even smiled at me.

I know that doesn't directly correlate to the service you would get in Maternity but I just couldn't bring myself to go back there for anything.

PotteringAlong · 27/04/2020 08:07

I’ve had all 3 of mine at at QE in gateshead and cannot fault them for any of the births or the post natal care. They were excellent on every occasion (2 induced, the middle one I went into labour naturally on the morning I was meant to be induced) and could definitely highly recommend.

PotteringAlong · 27/04/2020 08:08

And yes, I had my own room after the birth of DC1. I didn’t for the other 2 but didn’t need it and was happy that others had them.
