Siblings with names starting with the same sound/letter. Thoughts?

I am not sure what I am worrying about here but it just doesn't feel right.

But the ONLY boys name we can agree on starts with the same letter as ds's, plus the short form has the same second letter as his and the long form ends with the same letter as his

The initial sound is different IYKWIM, so it would be like having a john and a joe

(am sorry if this is confusing)

ds and db will be 4.5 years apart, and we also have a dd somewhere in the middle.

Thoughts?

(yes this is self obsessed and indulgent. That is why we come here, no?)

ALdy sister used to Nanny for ahd same initial as her kids, J

House was called The Three Jays

i thought it was quite cute tbh!

kindersurprise · 16/09/2007 20:37

Our two both have the same initial, but that was coincidence.

As to the post getting muddled, we have a DD and a DS so I would imagine most letters will be adressed to Mr or Miss.

It is handy for handing down clothes though, I don't have to change the nametags.

fruitful · 16/09/2007 20:41

I hated it when my brother used to open my post.

Now I think it would be quite handy to start yelling the child's name and then work out which one you want, half way through the word!

wheresthehamster · 16/09/2007 20:43

two As and an E for our dds. Most post for children come with the first name spelt out anyway and by the time they receive post that no one else should read they will have left home!

lucykate · 16/09/2007 20:48

both dd and ds's names start with 'Lu'. we didn't really plan it that way but when ds was born, we gave dd a list of 3 names to choose from as we liked them all, and that was the one she picked. we haven't had any problems with the fact that their names are similar.

both me & dh have the same initials. both 'AA'. the only thing we were certain of was that the dc's weren't going to be called names beginning with 'a' too

beansprout · 16/09/2007 20:48

Glad you started this thread as we are considering the "alliterative siblings issue" too!
My grandad actually gave his son his name (George). Son has special needs and has lived with his dad his whole life (he is now 60). That's a lot of confused post!!

RustyBear · 16/09/2007 20:50

DH & SIL both have the initials DM +surname - MIL actually said once it was to make name tags easier. In fact, no-one has ever called SIL by her first name, so there wasn't much confusion - except when they both applied for driving tests on the same day & the DVLC managed to cash both cheques & only give them one appointment.

Incidentally MIL and I are both Mrs J.Surname & there's only one letter different in our names, so that's another reason for not having her to live with us...

LyraBelacqua · 16/09/2007 20:52

My friend's DDs both have four-letter, two syllable names beginning with Lo. I always get their names mixed up.

fillyjonk · 16/09/2007 20:54

oh lol re post

I was definately getting a fair bit of post that I wouldn't have wanted ANYONE else reading by the time I was about...oooh...14 or so

Just thought of our ex-neighbours, their dcs were Luisa, Lucas and Luis. We just used to shout, "Luuuu" and see who came first.

wheresthehamster · 16/09/2007 21:03

fillyjonk, all the private stuff is done via texting nowadays

pointydog · 16/09/2007 21:04

to op, agree it doesn't feel right. I consciously avoided it. It sounds a bit lacking in imagination somehow.

fillyjonk · 16/09/2007 21:07

yes but you see my kids are NEVER going to have mobiles

in fact they are NEVER going to even want to have mobiles

(why yes, they ARE preschoolers...)

Interesting thread as I have been thinking about boys names for if and when we have another baby.

I have one DS at the moment and my next favourite boys name (after DS's name) begins with the same inital and I really don't know if I am ok with that (keep thinking about the post thing too).

My third choice name, we used as DS's middle name, so we are down to my 4th choice name at the moment but my brother's gf is expecting a boy in December and I am praying he doesn't use this name otherwise I really will be stuck as these are the only 4 boys names I like.......and I am not even pg yet !

geordiemacminx · 16/09/2007 21:13

My SIL has 4 kids all begining with K... very confusing!!!

berolina · 16/09/2007 21:18

My neighbour's boys both have 2-syllable names beginning with L - v. popular ones too. Have to admit I find that a bit of a shame.

SIL's and her sister's names begin with A and B. Their children's names begin (in order of birth) with C, D, E and (this one still in utero) F...

designerbaby · 17/09/2007 11:16

I once went out with a guy called Eric.
He had a sister ? Erica.

I sh*t you not...

That may be going a BIT far... same first letter I reckon is fine...

evilreturns · 17/09/2007 11:21

i know a daniel and danielle - brother and sister.

i also know a kelly and kerry. sisters.

far too similar IMHO.

if you're not comfortable with the names, go with something else.

my dc's have very different names and i mix them up anyway. even though i have a ds and 2 dds! some days i even call them by MY siblings names

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 17/09/2007 11:21

TBH, Sharing the first letter is not really that confusing. It is more confusing when parents chose to call their children names that really sounds the same, Such as Daniella and Gabriella. Joe and Jasper, or Jim and John doesnt sound so bad in comparison, in my opinion. this wasnt really helpful at all. sorry

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 17/09/2007 11:22

oh, snap evil, lol!

LyraBelacqua · 17/09/2007 12:43

I know a Kelly and Kelsy, brother and sister.

Miaou · 17/09/2007 20:11

I knew identical twins called Sherry and Shelley !

Tassis - you probably don't really care but here is a summary of the "pattern":

dd1 - C H (first name is 7 letters long)
dd2 - E L (6 letters)
ds1 - C L (5 letters)
ds2 - E H (4 letters)

And no,we didn't realise until dd1 pointed it out!

tassisssss · 18/09/2007 14:58

Miaou, thanks for explaining! You planning any more?!

Miaou · 18/09/2007 18:16

lol, NO! Four is deffo enough for me

hertsnessex · 18/09/2007 18:27

my dh and ds1 have same first inital (not name!) so may cause probs later on, but i generally open most of the post - so i wont worry about it til i open a love letter from a girlfirend in 15yrs time!!!! (or his subscription to penthouse....or my dhs, now that would be interesting!!!)
