Confused what baby wears at night!

Looking online at what a baby wears at night is really puzzling me. I know it's what baby likes etc but can anyone let me know the sort of combinations they used? Baby isn't due till August, so I expect it will be a but warmer then, if that makes any difference.
My mother in law has got us a Chicco next to me incase that matters too!

Bsbygro and vest or only vest if hot summer weather. Then a gro bag 1 tog in summer or warm spring 2.5 tog rest of the time.

It always says vest and sleep suit but my DS just worse sleepsuit because he was boiling otherwise (in Feb)

ChainsawBear · 25/04/2020 14:09

Babies basically wear sleepsuits round the clock for the first 3-4 months. Or just a vest or romper if it's hot.

At night in summer a newborn would probably wear sleepsuit or short-sleeved vest + sleeping bag - 1 tog or 0.2, dependent on room temperature. There are some helpful diagrams online.

Babygro products come with a very handy temperature chart that tells you EXACTLY what to put on them (so a thermometer is handy too). It's also on their website.

SquigglyOne · 25/04/2020 14:37

When baby was in his Moses basket I put him in a vest (Short sleeved or sleeveless depending on what was clean/dry!) and sleep suit with a cellular blanket on top. He was born in January so pretty cold.
Now he’s in his cot I have him in a long sleeved vest and sleeping bag. 2.5 tog for when it’s 16 - 20 degrees and 1 tog when it’s above 20. We have one of those grown egg thermometers in our room which I have found really helpful!

RhymingRabbit3 · 25/04/2020 14:45

Get a gro egg thermometer which tells you the room temp and what to dress them in. It depends on the temperature but generally a combo of vest and/or sleepsuit with sleeping bag

doadeer · 25/04/2020 14:48

Depends on temp of your house.

Ours rarely drops below 23 degrees so my DS at the moment only wear a long sleep vest with bare legs and a 1/0.5tog

On the gros bag website they advise what tog you need based on temp and what to dress baby in.

Unless your house is really cold, I would say just a sleep suit for bed no need for vest

rottiemum88 · 25/04/2020 14:57

DS is a naturally warm baby and hates having anything "on" him when he sleeps. So he just wears a fleecy sleepsuit with vest underneath in winter and a cotton one with or without a vest when it's warmer. Maybe even just the vest when it's really hot

dochas06 · 25/04/2020 14:59

Sleepsuit (all in one) and a sleeping bag.
She won’t sleep unless she has clothing on her legs..

Just keep in my that gro bags aren't suitable for newborns. There is a minimum weight.

DD was never under the minimum weight. And I don't do vests. I'm a big fan of the 'feel their neck' gauge of appropriate clothing.

RhymingRabbit3 · 25/04/2020 16:14

The minimum weight is 8lbs 13oz. Many newborns weigh this much or more, or get there very quickly. We used cellular blankets for a few weeks until she reached the weight limit.

kittykat7210 · 25/04/2020 16:26

Completely depends on the baby. All the guides online would have overheated our daughter! She needed far less clothing than suggested. So I’d take the guides with a pinch of salt and just respond to your own baby!

Williams3001 · 25/04/2020 17:13

You can get muslin sleep bags for summer, too, if you're wanting to go that way.

Or there are some really nice merino wool ones that do 'all-season' (16–27˚C) though they're more expensive.

General rule is to dress baby in one more layer than you, as they're so tiny they cool down quicker, but every baby is different.

Handy guide here

triedandtestedteacher · 25/04/2020 17:20

Mine wore a nightie and cellular blankets. Nighties are much easy for changing at night instead of being bog eyed trying to do poppers

novacaneforthepain · 25/04/2020 18:53

@MrsTerryPratchett @RhymingRabbit3 yes your right, I should of wrote some newborns ! Doesnt count for me either my boy was born 5kg.. ouch

Darkstar4855 · 25/04/2020 19:48

I swaddled mine initially then went into grobags. Had a Gro Egg thermometer then followed their guide as to what to put him in according to the room temperature. Basically sleepsuit, vest and 2.5 tog bag in the winter then long sleeved vest and 1 tog bag in the summer.

Hockeyboysmum · 25/04/2020 19:54

Gonna be a while before my 4 week old is in a sleeping bag (born 4lb 1 oz) loved them with my eldest tho.

Thekindyoufindinasecondhand · 25/04/2020 21:19

This is so helpful, than you everyone. One last question, how many sets of sheets did you have for your babies cot?

OP posts:
AldiAisleOfCrap · 25/04/2020 22:24

I had four, so no stress with washing/drying fast if baby spat up on the sheet.
