Blood disorder

Evening ladies,
I’m not pregnant or trying to conceive, but me and my fiancé have decided that we’d like to ttc in a couple of years.
The only thing that is really terrifying me is the fact that I have Factor V Leiden and what effects it would have on my and the pregnancy.

I obviously understand the blood disorder, but what does it mean for pregnancy or what do I need to know and do for when I do become pregnant.

If there is anyone on here who knows of or has the same blood disorder and could calm this anxiety (that isn’t even needed yet), it would be extremely appreciated Smile

I have Factor V Leiden. I didn’t discover this until I was pregnant; I had a DVT at 4/5 weeks and a blood test revealed the condition. I was put on twice daily Clexane injections throughout pregnancy and for quite a while after. When I fell pregnant again I went straight back on them. I see a haematologist every few months (only when pregnant) who does a blood test to check levels.
I have had a couple of miscarriages and will never know where the condition caused them or not.
It’s actually a very common blood disorder and you’ll probably get a few replies here.

I’m not sure if they’ll put you on an anticoagulant or not.

I also have Factor V Leiden. My sister had a DVT which I disclosed at my booking in appointment. Therefore I was tested when pregnant with my daughter - I started injecting myself with fragments once I had found out - about 28 weeks?

With this pregnancy, because I knew about the Factor V Leiden from the start I insisted on blood thinners from the start - 6 weeks- ish? I'm under consultant care and feel ok about it now - am 20 weeks.

It’s a lot more common then you think, you’ll be put on blood thinners throughout your pregnancy. You’re already at an advantage as you already know, many get diagnosed in pregnancy so you have a head start. Good luck

Fragmin- not fragments!

Thank you so much ladies for your responses.
First it was the idea of having to push the baby out at the end that was putting me off having children but now it’s the thought of anything developing due to having it throughout pregnancy.

I inherited it from my mum, and she’s had 2 dvts and is on Warfarin now for the rest of her life.

Apparently there are two types of Factor V Leiden, where you’re a carrier and get blood clots, or a carrier and never have a blood clot in your life.

I hate needles of any sorts so the thought of having to inject myself daily for 9 months is really terrifying.

Like I said, I’m not planning on having a baby just yet, but it’s nice to know there are women out there who have been through it.

Have the most wonderful weekend
