When is induced baby most likely to arrive?

I’m going into hospital on Friday evening to be induced at 38 weeks. I’m nervous but also very excited to meet our firstborn! I’ll be starting off with a pessary and then another one if that doesn’t work, followed by gel. The doctor has told me he expects DS to arrive any time between 48 and 72 hrs, so I should of given birth by Monday night or the early hrs of Tuesday at the latest.

Does that sound right to you? I’m really hoping for Tuesday because the 28th is an important anniversary for me, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to hold on that long! Grin What do you think?

Different method of induction, but I had the balloon in for 24 hours, after which my waters were broken. Was then put on the drip and gave birth just over 22 hours later.

So all in about two days for me.

pebble5552 · 21/04/2020 10:29

Does pessary take longer than the balloon? I have a low pain threshold so will be 100% be having an epidural - I’ve heard it slows things down a bit!

Pessary was put in 3pm Friday, ds was born 6:30pm Saturday so just over a day for me

pebble5552 · 21/04/2020 10:32

So 72 hrs is unlikely would you say?

Totally depends on whether or not your body is ready and baby is in a good position I'm afraid. I was induced for DS1 and it was 66 hours, first babies do take longer.

Pineappletree33 · 21/04/2020 10:34

Started on a Friday morning. I had max dose of pessaries didn’t do the trick. Doctor said he’d try to break waters but don’t hold your breath, happily he managed it, started on drip, baby born Tuesday morning.

pebble5552 · 21/04/2020 10:51

The baby’s pointing down but not engaged is what my midwife said. So I’m guessing that may slow it down a bit as well?

It really depends on if your body has started to do things itself already. If you’re 1cm dilated when you’re induced, it will happen much quicker than someone whose cervix is high and closed.

I was induced and had the baby about 24 hours later but failed to progress beyond a few cm dilated and she was born by EMCS.

One thing is that inductions tend to bring on stronger / more frequent contractions so don’t be disheartened if it feels like things should be moving quicker than they are. Yes to the epidural!!

Good luck! Whatever happens you’ll be meeting your baby very soon!

I had the pessaries, gel, countless sweeps over the course of 9 days. Day 10 they made the decision to not start the process again and broke my waters, 14 hours later he still didn't want to come into the world as was wheeled down for an emergency c section.

Some who are induced go very quickly, I didn't.

LividLaughLovely · 21/04/2020 11:00

I was induced at 39 weeks on a Monday.

Nothing much happened. I insisted on a section rather than drip by Wednesday and he was delivered by section early hours of the Friday.

Tiddlertoddler · 21/04/2020 11:12

I was induced at 40+6, that was the Monday afternoon, was a very slow process and baby ended up being born by c-section early hours of Thursday morning. That was also the balloon method then hormone drip.

pebble5552 · 21/04/2020 11:13

Okay, so it sounds like Tuesday is a possibility! Though obviously I’ll be very excited to meet DS if he makes an appearance before then! Grin I haven’t lost my mucus plug and baby’s still quite high so I think my cervix could still be closed?

If you can don't go in with a timescale in your mind. I know it's difficult but labours take as long as they take and unfortunately some early inductions are just not sucessful. A friend of mine was also induced with her first a few weeks before me and she didn't progress after 72 hours so she had a c section. She was fine, baby was fine, it does happen and it wasn't an emergency or stressful in any way, just there's no going back once your waters have broken.

orlarose · 21/04/2020 11:18

I started labour about 8 hours after pessary inserted, 3 and half hour labour.

Dinosauraddict · 21/04/2020 11:18

I was induced at 38+0. Baby was engaged and I had started to lose my mucus plug. When they started the induction (with the gel) they said I was already 2cm dilated. I had the gel in for 6 hours, they checked me I was 3cm so they decided to break my waters. I then went from 3cm to a delivered baby in 2 hours 40 mins. Inductions don't always take a long time, but the midwives were amazed and it was too quick for anything like an epidural!

orlarose · 21/04/2020 11:18

Sorry, should of said that was first baby and cervix was high and completely closed.

turnthebiglightoff · 21/04/2020 11:19

50 horrific hours in labour for me; went in at 9am sat and baby born 5pm mon; kept in for 3 days. I really wouldn't wish for any longer, OP!

EvilHerbivore · 21/04/2020 11:21

I was induced 9am and baby born 1.30am the following morning so so 16/17ish hours.
Had a pessary at 9am and anther at 5pm

pebble5552 · 21/04/2020 11:24

Do they let you get a good nights sleep at any point in the process?

Had my first Pessary 6am Saturday, had my waters broken Sunday12am followed by the drip . Baby was born 10.06am Monday& it was certainly long enough !

Persipan · 21/04/2020 11:26

I was induced at 39 weeks; I had the pessary at 9.30 in the morning on the Friday and baby arrived at 4am on Saturday. There's really no telling!

nyedry · 21/04/2020 11:28

I had a pessary at 8pm, was taken from the ward to the delivery suite at 5am and DS was born at 7am the following morning .
I think it will vary from person to person, your body may react differently to different drugs/ methods than someone else would.

Chista · 21/04/2020 11:30

Sorry forgot to mention, was my first and they wanted to induce at 36 weeks but I refused and finally accepted inducement to commence at 37 weeks.

georgialondon · 21/04/2020 11:32

Mine took 2hrs

literategiraffe · 21/04/2020 11:36

I was induced at 37+4, one 24hr pessary and through to L&D to have my waters broken. DD arrived almost exactly 48hrs from my arrival at the hospital.
