12 week scan NT 4.6

Hi,

I had my 12 week scan today. I had declined the combined testing but the sonographer told me that she had to check the NT as she could see increased fluids. It was all very scary and I didn’t really know what was going on, particularly given I was on my own. I have been referred for an appointment with the consultant on Thursday when I will have another scan and if the concerns are still there I can have the harmony test on Thursday if I wish, albeit I will have to pay. This is my first pregnancy so I feel a bit all over the place right now, has anyone else been through a similar experience?

I have posted this on the antenatal test section too but didn’t know if I might be more likely to get a response here.

My last pregnancy was right on the higher edge of normal and I had a harmony test done a few days later and results took 3/4 days I think. It's a simple blood test like any other...

notinthestarsigns · 20/04/2020 19:39

@Honeymonster2 what was the outcome if you don’t mind me asking?

Hi @Notinthestarsigns, you can find a lot information about this in the 'Antenatal Tests' section.
May I ask what your reason behind declining the combined test was?

notinthestarsigns · 20/04/2020 19:51

Thanks @NoCallerID. I declined the combined screening test because having discussed it we did not think that we would want the invasive tests and so we didn’t want to be in the position of knowing there was a risk from the screening if we were not going to have the diagnostic test. But now we have been put in that position anyway! I will see how the scan with the consultant goes and then maybe have the harmony test but I don’t know, all a bit overwhelming right now

One of my twins had downs syndrome and I had an amnio afterwards to confirm. Unfortunately I lost both girls shortly after, I think due to the amnio test, but still yet to confirm. I didn't want to say without you asking because I didn't want to worry you. When I was googling before, a lot of the stuff I read was people who had had false alarms as such. I'm really hopeful for you!

NoCallerID · 20/04/2020 20:13

I understand that. Please let us know how it goes.

Treaclepie19 · 20/04/2020 21:14

I have had this but mine was a bad experience.
Our little boys nuchal measurement was 5.3mm.
Had the NIPT (same as harmony) and all came back fine. Eventually had an amnio as the consultant said normally with a high nuchal something is wrong and they were right.

I wish you all the best, feel free to message me if it will help x

@Honeymonster2 I’m so sorry xx

Thank you @Treaclepie19. I am sorry that you had a bad experience also. I just wish we could go to the appts together when dealing with something like this but obviously not possible right now

Thank you @notinthestarsigns, I had a termination for medical reasons in the end because he was so poorly.
I do feel for you going alone to these appointments. I hope they're taking really good care of you Flowers

Naturalbornkiller · 20/04/2020 21:46

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. I know how confusing and awful it is.

Ds had nt measure about 4.7 or somthing, can't remember how much exactly but it wasn't that far over the limit.

We were told 50% chance of downs or some other chromosome abnormality, 25% chance of some other problem (what was never really made clear) , 25% of normal baby.

We had cvs. It came back normal so we assumed we were in the good 25%. We weren't. Ds is profoundly disabled. I was nieve to continue the pregnancy thinking everything would be fine. But I also don't think the doctors were that honest with us.

If I were you I would take the cvs so you at least know what you might be dealing with. And if it comes back normal just be prepared that you could still be having a baby with issues.

Treaclepie19 · 20/04/2020 22:28

@Naturalbornkiller I'm so sorry for all you've been through Flowers

doadeer · 20/04/2020 22:38

It's very scary I really feel for you.

I was 29 years old, no family history of downs, we went for scan and we're told we had an NT of 4.8. We were taken past everyone waiting into a counselling room and told there was a high chance of downs or other conditions. It was such a shock.

We went to a larger hospital a few days later thinking we would do harmony test but the consultants immediately said with an NT that high they would prefer to do CVS so they can screen for any other problems and get a diagnostic result rather than a probability.

I had CVS - it wasn't pleasant but it was OK. We then had a horrible few weeks of waiting. We got the downs, Edwards and pataus (sp?)result first which was negative and then it was another week to get the full all clear.

Through the pregnancy I had additional scans and everything was healthy.

I have a beautiful healthy son .

I don't know what to say other than what a tough time it is. I drove myself mad reading stories about other women... I don't know if it made me feel better or worse

Me too. I read so many stories of other women but in reality it has no bearing on your own personal experience. You just have to look at the statistics, listen to the doctors and weight up your chances against what you feel you can manage in a child.

Aly92 · 21/04/2020 12:52

I was supposed to have the ds test but the baby wasn’t cooperating. Thy still offered the blood test but then that fell through and I just took it as a sign. I knew whether my baby had ds or not i would never get rid of him/her so I chose to leave it in gods hands. I have a healthy baby girl now. Do what feels right

notinthestarsigns · 21/04/2020 12:53

I think you’re right, as you say everyone’s circumstances are different and everyone’s experiences of going through this will be different. I think it does help to feel that you are not alone and to feel more informed but I am conscious that too much googling can do more harm than good x

I felt so ill this morning I was tempted to stay off sick until the appointment with the consultant but I am trying to plod on with work as at least it’s a distraction

I had a 4.6NT 9 years ago. 1 in 3 overall chance of DS. Doctors convinced something wasn’t right. Eventually pressured me into an amnio.

But they were wrong and I have a normal healthy son.

notinthestarsigns · 23/04/2020 21:53

Unfortunately it wasn’t good news for us today. The consultant picked up further issues than just the raised NT and so he didn’t think the NIPT test would be helpful. We are to go back for another scan in 4 weeks when he should be able to see what’s going on but there is a poor prognosis and, in the meantime, an increased risk of miscarriage as it looks like the gestational sac may be collapsing.
