Essential oil

Hi Ladies
Currently 21.5 weeks pregnant and doing great. Had 20 scan on Thurs and all looks brilliant. Feel a bit stupid today though. I do yoga almost every day and for the past two weeks I've been putting Jasmine oil in my diffuser for the first twenty minutes of my yoga session. Then I tend to be warm and open the window! Just found out Jasmine can be dangerous but it's not clear how. I know (now) that Clary Sage can bring on labour but it's not clear if Jasmine has the same effect.

Just wonder if there's anyone out there who made a similar mistake with essential oils and everything was still alright? I also put one or two drops of ylang ylang on my hand to smell it before I put it in the diffuser...didn't think but will be more careful going forward.

I'm pretty sure both lavender oil and ylang-ylang are both some of the oils that are okay to use in pregnancy. Just avoid putting any undiluted essential oils on your skin, which you should do generally anyway as they can be really irritating on your skin.

Baby Centre (which is endorsed by the NHS) has an article about this, too: www.babycentre.co.uk/x536449/is-it-safe-to-use-essential-oils-while-im-pregnant.

Smelling a tiny bit of essential oil is not going to do anything! Imagine all the women who wear perfume throughout the pregnancy every day and nothing happens.

It would be an issue if you rubbed it into your skin every day, but even some jasmine scented cosmetics seem to be fine in pregnancy. I would avoid doing a lot of skin contact with it, but as aromatherapy, I don't think it should do any harm, especially for such short periods of time.

@Williams3001 yes I saw that, thank you! I've been using Jasmine in my diffuser and it isn't on the list, but other sources say to avoid...that's the one I'm a bit concerned about. Many thanks!

@MonaLisaDoesntSmile Thank you! Yes, I guess I just have to wait and see and learn from it. I won't be using it again and will diffuse ylang ylang instead. There's so much to avoid in pregnancy, I didn't think the essential oils would cause a problem. Maybe they won't!

I don't even think inhaling a tiny bit of jasmine oil would do much, unless you work in a jasmine oil factory lol :)
I suppose if it was in skincare or someting with prolonged usage it would matter.
